Actually, rinderpest has also been eliminated by mankind.
Ebola has disappeared many times and then reappeared in a different form (strain) in a different place. This may be due to entering a different host and having a period of latency.

Sorry, but I think that virus is here for the long haul. I don't see it being gone until a minimum of two years after a vaccine is in mass production and widely distributed...and with the massive antivaxer "movements" around the world the virus is almost certainly going to be around for a generation or two (possibly for the rest of human existence). Hopefully that bridge will be finished long before all this COVID nonsense has ended.

Long ago it moved away from safety aspects to individual/societal ones. People feel safe here because of a very low number of infections where they live - in fact, in many areas there has been no localised infections for many months. We would not be hiding in bomb-shelters here if there was a war in, for example, France. The opinions expressed by some would be different if they were living in a 'hot spot' with huge numbers of cross-infections - they could continue their views on age and risk but the risk factor would be against them, and they would know it.-

Your posts (along with some 30 odd other posts, including some of my own) were off topic in a thread about restaurants remaining open. That is the only reason they were moved here. Feel free to carry on the conversation here and go on as many tangents as you like.

My post here about Filipino youth attitude to safety has been moved to 'Off Topic'. Presumably the Moderator that did this could not see the relationship to younger peoples' attitude to safety measures to mitigate against virus spread, as this was in response to a similar comment. Maybe it was too subtle? Just checking so that I know how to word things in the future.

Frankly, I see all of the people in charge saying they want to follow the science and the data. I see quite the opposite. I see them following fear.
The policies are COVID March 2020, not COVID June 2020.-

None of the previous strains of corona-type virus created widespread damage in the body, H1N1 didn't do that, SARS didn't do that ... they were strictly respiratory infections. It was expected that covid19 would behave similarly, and so it WAS a surprise to the medical community to discover the far reaching damage from this virus which is not like anything that was encountered before from a supposed respiratory virus. I'm surprised you're surprised because you didn't know that.
Nobody is trying to instill fear into people, that is just your particular perspective which is pretty clear. Quite the contrary, they want people to be informed and to be aware so that they will NOT be acting out of fear, but rather be motivated by knowledge and make informed intelligent decisions.-

The way the media has sensationalized COVID-19, as well as the energy devoted by governments worldwide, likely resulted in more testing and more follow-up on the victims than for any disease in a long time. Finding the after effects of a disease that infects a person isn't new, but we're sure looking into this one closely.
Everything we do that results in cell division, which is almost everything in life, has a potential for mutation, the results of which can be catastrophic, such as cancer. You can't live without dying and life damages our bodies until we're dead. If anyone is surprised that a disease can cause damage to a person's body, then I'm surprised that they're surprised.-
