Our kid goes to OIS. This week we got hit with a "registration fee" of PhP5k for the fall semester, although this was described as "consumable." Invoice didn't say it was non-refundable. That's not to say it isn't. Of greater concern is another big hike in school fees, which have again gone up well above inflation. The fact that this coincides with a very worrying turnover in teaching staff (another three leaving in the next few days) and other major long-term concerns means that our child almost certainly won't be going back in September. Seems he won't be the only one saying goodbye!
I don't know if that 440,000 number was correct but at that price, and in fact any price, why not homeschool your child? Tutors are available for much cheaper than that if you think that they are necessary, but I don't believe that they are. As for private schools not being subject to market forces, why shouldn't they be? No one has suggested that "kids are a commodity" but instruction is, just like any service, and the best way to improve it is with competition and market forces. Why do you think private schools exist in the first place when there are public schools available?
It depends how you pay (monthly / termly / yearly), but 3rd-4th grade education costs well over PhP 300k / year... much more if you pay monthly! The older the child, the more the fees go up, so the 440k figure for older / more advanced students is believable.
