Depends what you send, i have sent many things to Bohol with Balikbayan box and paid zero tax. the form that you have to fill in, i put general domestic items. I all so send them with Belwood a local Balikbayan shipping company from England. hope this helps you in the future.

 

Import duty varies by item, some items are free, while others are 100% or more of new cost. Google "Philippine customs duty", you may find the duty sheet.

First, it is hard to put a kajak in a Balikbayan box.... LOL

Any way. I wanted a special Phone, called ZTE Blade and is also namded San Fransisco in Eurpoe. The phone is better than Iphone and Nokia8, beats them both across the board. Smart in Phil promised an introduction in March 2011, under the name of NetPhoe and that didn't happend. Price at Smart was supposed to be around P8000 plus a contract for 2 years.

I ordered the phone "San Fransisco" from UK at the price of 138 Pounds plus shipping express with DHL 35 Pounds. The sender stated on package "GIFT at a value of 50 Pounds" and the insurance was at 200 Pounds in case something happend during shipping. I received the phone after 6 days at my door and ZERO charges. So I assume the import tax has to do with what the sender declare as a value and if it is private property or a gift being shipped.
I highly recommend DHL, and have used them many times in Dumaguete when sending packages to US and Europe.
By the way, if you want an excellent phone with Internet and Wifi plus all the bells and whistels, get the Orange San Fransisco, available on Ebay from UK. They are brand new out of box, debranded and unlocked phones, Excellent.
Total Pesos around 12.000. Happy camper!

well if your talking things like a kayak and so forth it would be more than DHL or a Balikbayan would handle, you should be talking to a freight forwarder. Put a package together and have them ship it for you, they take care of the logistics.

 

well, what Benjamin and his friend did is simply smuggling and of course illegal

we need to clarify that "Happy She & me", who did advice for illegal activities has nothing to do with DI, its owner administrators and other with DI connected people.

(Explanation: we got sued for less than members writing smuggling guidelines)

Back to the topic:
it really depends a lot, what you ship to the PI. If you send more than a few item you can probably rent a container partially for the volume you need.

My parents shipped a quite valuable guitar and filled the case up with my favorite gummi-bears. The customs usually scan parcels upon arrival. In Dumaguete I got a call to pick up my parcel. It came without the gummi-bears :( . My parents did not declare them also ... :(

The guy here in Dumaguete started talking about the tax I have to pay but after a lengthy discussion he understood that a 20 year old piece of wood with a brand not known to him can't have any value and I needed to pay 20 peso fee for some paperwork before I could leave.

However, try to stick to bigger companies with good reputations. Just had a case in the neighborhood where a lady needed to pay almost 15K "taxes" to get her parcel from a smaller company in the US. Their Manila agent contacted her that it is hold back by the customs and she need to pay that amount. she did and the parcel arrived. After we talked about it I smelled something fishy and adviced her to contact the main office in the US.

That company has no agent in Manila ... So somehow that guy was able (or worked together with whoever is in charge there) to hold back the parcel until the lady paid.
