Now you're living the dream! Retirement at it's finest.... On a serious note, hope you situation improves or goes away. Mark
Norm, you can come by and see my three security screen doors made from small steel screens and covered by heavy duty wider steel diamond shaped grills, with both a bolt lock and a sliding lock. I used AJ Glass and Aluminum for my work. They will custom make most any type of door you need. Roadking, I respect your opinion and in an ideal world it should not be necessary but I believe foreigners here can be targets for the bad guys - see Bacong killing of two house breaking thieves. Rather safe than sorry, IMHO.
CS gas spray canisters (tear gas) are available in Handyman priced p199.75. They are sold under the trade name of Back Off. They are near to the electrical department, in a locked cabinet where they also keep the rechargeable batteries and torches. The canister is about 4 or 5 inches tall, has a belt clip and a safety cover. They can deliver a sustained burst or short individual bursts and are effective up to 12 feet (3 metres), but do try and remember to make sure that your target is downwind of you, because if you get a blow back it will bring tears to a glass eye. For the technically minded, CS are the letters assigned to orthochlorobenzylidenemalononitrile, with the chemical formula C10H5CIN2. The letters CS are taken from the surnames of Ben Corson and Roger Stoughton, two American chemists who created the product in 1928. In a previous life I used to teach this stuff, and some of it has stuck in the back of my mind. CS will subdue and disorientate the most out of control attacker; the only draw back would be if the attacker was armed, in which case he might start firing randomly. But the natural reaction is to put both hands to the eyes and rub them, which is the very worst thing to do as it aggravates and enhances the effect. But a good burst, full face, will lay them low long enough to get in close and zap them with a stun gun. A 2 second burst from a stun gun will have them writhing on the floor, a 4 second burst will make them feel as if their nipples are on fire and their nuts are about to explode, and although 6 seconds wont kill them, they will wish they were dead. DavyL is correct, downstairs at Robinsons outside of Jollibee they have various models. I bought one in Makati that looks like a phone for 900 peso. Never had to use it, but in Manila its' insurance.
Just get friendly with the local cops and it works wonders, get a few phone numbers from them, what helps if you just drop them a few kg of rice or a few peso now and then, then they are just a call away and will always help out! The bacong lads are ok and the chief is a good guy but as you know here in the Phil's peso helps! Good luck with the probs.
As you know Mark, the Bloods and Crips originated from that area and now there are apparently gangs in the PI that go by those names as well. Where there are bad guys and drug sales there are thieves to try and fund their habits. My compound is secured but my family and I sleep better knowing I am armed and my security measures would give me time to do whatever is necessary to protect my family and my property, so burglars or drunk violent jerkoffs stay away please. My approach might be considered an overkill by some but many of the guys here I know also have guns and security grills.
My ex-Makati GF gave me the same pain or was it pleasure. Beats singing the marine corps hymn in the tear gas chamber...
