    Car Rental

I rented a Mitso Adventure from Ken's Trading about 18 months ago. P 2000 a day. They didn't try to
rip me off but, as other members have said, it's only a short term option.

Which used cars did you look at, and in which places?

You need to make an investment of course. But running a used car in the Philippines can be fairly inexpensive. Basic insurance and registration fee is only about 3.000-4.000 peso pr. year, and if you buy and sell well, depreciation need not be more than perhaps 10.000-15.000 peso pr. year in the long run. I bought a Toyota Corolla for 265.000 peso in 2004, and could probably sell it for somewhere between 120.000 and 150.000 today, if I wanted to. The biggest expense has been gasoline and the second biggest maintenance and repairs.

One thing to know about the Philippine used car market is, that there is some kind of invisible “floor” under used car prices. This is because many buyers are cash restrained. And therefore they will take any car, they can get for, say, 150.000 peso over one costing 250.000 peso, even the cheaper one is much older and more run down. The better long term values are therefore not found in the cheapest and oldest part of the market, but higher up on the price list.

As others have stated already, Ceres Liner run fairly comfortable large busses on the route from Zamboanguita to Dumaguete. If its to far for you to walk to the bus stop, maybe you can get the phone number of a local tricycle driver, who is willing to come and pick you in the house and take you to the bus stop, every time you want to go.

Or you can get the phone number of a taxi or “van-for-rent” company in Dumaguete, who will then come and pick you up and take you all the way to Dumaguete "door to door", when you want to go. This will not be particularly cheap but still cheaper than renting a car for 2.000 peso pr. day, unless you are planning to make the 30 km long trip several times a day.

I have been speaking to the Girlfriend & keep getting blocked as she wants me to save so I can go there to meet her instead of spending money & not being able to afford to go there, but I feel I NEED to have some way of getting around as I am use to my independence here being able to drive.

Her Brothers drive Tricycles in Dumaguete, & I have asked her to ask her Brothers to ask their Employer if they have a GOOD Tricycle with a Honda/ Yamaha/ Suzuki/ Kawasaki Bike that is suitable for 'Private use' so once I leave it can serve as the 'Family mode of Transport'... Her Brother is Licenced to Drive a Tricycle so I would assume both Brother's could Drive us around if we wish to go somewhere. There are some very good deals for Tricycles around Manila, but shipping it by Ferry from Manila to Dumaguete would most likely end up cheaper to buy one in Dumaguete at the end of the day...

I am going there (I hope) from this coming November to January to live the 3 months with her Family to try and gauge my chances of tolerating the Heat & getting around there with my Disabilities, they are poor as Rats as am I so I need to watch the Pennies & if all goes well; try find the right Govt. Department here to speak to & try & push to keep my Australian Disability Pension if I am able to move to the Philippines, then weigh up the costs of buying my Pain Medication from there instead of buying on concession here, money will be tight but I really want out of here and to make it there if possible... *Fingers Crossed*
