Hello all, as I enjoy a bit of gardening and are lucky enough to own a small lot of land, I would like to ask anyone in the knowing which fruit trees and vegetables, originating from western countries would grow in the countryside surrounding Dumaguete. I would be keen on trying something different such as grapes, large sizes watermelons, kiwis, apricot, peaches, figs, olives and beef tomatoes to say some.........:p

i have a small vineyard here in cebu just for family consupmtion..i graft my vines,,,the stock i use are the wild variety and the scion is the cardinal variety...its already bearing now on and on its sugaring stage maybe in a week or two i could harvest them.....grape vines do grow in the PI but, it really needs to be well cared because of the humid climate they are very much prone to fungus and the vines are always attacked by termites.

    regards

    Salad Tomatoes

Tomatoes, the size of your hopefully small pinkies--those grow here. With help, I tried growing them and have succeeded to even include some in a fish dish. These miniscule tomatoes are best for salads. The seeds I got were from South Korea but they should be carried in agri stores maybe in Cebu.

Many thanks to all for your reply. I'll try to get some seeds in to grow those huge watermelons that normally grow in the mediterranean region and may be kiwi or figs by getting some fruits in. Pests are always a bit of a problem, importing seeds in the country could also be forbidden......any feedback with this regards?
    Regards to all.

    Importing seeds

If taking in a small well-sealed packet, no problema. Still, show the packet to the customs people and play safe that way. As for those gigantic watermelons, I've seen them in Panay Island. Better to get specimens that are already tested in country.

I have successfully grown beefsteak Tomatoes here, however it is a lot of work and you need quality seeds. The seed packets you buy at your local home improvement store probably won't do so well.

I buy all of my seeds at Wholesale, Bulk, Flower, Vegetable Seeds by Mountain Valley Seed They are in Utah, USA. They are laboratory tested and the germination rate is on the sealed bag they are sent in.

I have also grown bell peppers, thai peppers, jalapeno peppers and cherry peppers from the same company.

I am thinking about making an order and having more seeds shipped here, maybe a few of us can get together and split the cost of shipping.
