I can't blame the Indians for any attacks, although not wise to attack a technological superior society, against the colonists. The Indians did not rape the land of everything it had, they only took what they needed. Colony expansion was a threat to their very way of life. I can understand their anger. The colonists were lucky the natives were fighting themselves and did not see the much larger threat and band together or there would have been many more deaths among the colonists.
I think his post is still on topic with US gun laws. He is trying to show what could happen if guns were outlawed in the US. Showing that just because you outlaw guns doesn't mean that you are safer. However, I do question the statistics posted. The Site posted is of a blog/forum with no references to the stats. The guy could have just made all those stats up. I don't believe that more gun restrictions will stop crimes. Most criminals aren't getting their guns from a gun store legally anyways. Yeah, you hear of these big news shootings where someone was killed with a legally purchased gun, I'd say this is not the norm though (although I have no stats to back that up). Take a look at the stats on who the majority of the victims of gun violence are.....minorities (minus asians). School shootings only make the news when the school is primarily white. Being black or Hispanic in an urban environment greatly increases your chances of being shot. This is not a race issue, it's a poverty issue. No guns for poor people! If you want to implement gun restrictions you should require a paystub showing you legally make more than 40k a year. 20 years in prison and trigger fingers cut off (castration mandatory if a family history of poor people) if caught with an illegal firearm. (psst, that's tongue in cheek just in case anyone gets offended)
Well, mate i would not put to much credence in CNN, they are rapidly becoming the most descredited news organization since Pravda. I cannot comment much on Australia, but i would love to visit there someday, but i think we are comparing apples to oranges. The US is a very different country both in size, population and ethnicity. In the state of Arizona we have had no rise in gun related problems since the establishment of CCW .
Steve: Australia is the only Country in recent history with a culture of gun ownership parallel with the US and firearms confiscation by the govt. The reason for using those quotes and years was to point up what happens IMMEDIATELY after gun confiscation. There is no better "social labratory" than them for the demonstration of the results of gun confiscation. Simply put, it was not to "shift focus" from the US, as you alledge, but to use a concrete, parallel example. The figures were from a forum called What happened when Guns were banned in Australia!, not the NRA, although the NRA's facts and figures are respected by even their strongest critics as accurate. Were they not, they would have as much credibility as Eric Holder and his "Fast and Furious" Congressional testimony. CNN is infamous for their anti-gun stance and left-wing views. I hadly think they are credible as "impartial media". After reading thetranscript of Howard's interview, two points became clear to me. First, sinceit was his "signature legislation" that was crammed down the throats of the federation of states--"But, in the end, we were able to use the power of public outrage plus the fact that my government had just been elected with a big majority to, in effect, persuade, I'll put it politely, the states to agree to implement the nationwide ban." One would no more expect him to refute that then for obama to refute obamacare. Secondly, the most dramatic reduction in homicides was in the SUICIDE RATE for young males---please help me to understand how that reduces thethreat of violence to me or my family. The phrasing of the questions and the "politicians replies" form a very specious argument. Steve, please explain why Chicago, with the most stringent gun laws in America, has the highest murder rate? Why did the murder rate in Washington D.C drop after the Heller decision that allowed private ownership of firearms?? In science or logic, one looks for the cause/effect relationship. So far, I have never seen anything that refutes Mr. Lott's hypothesis that fire arms in the hands of responsible, trained persons reduce crime. I am always open to review empirical data from a reliable source to counter that position. By the way, the data I earlier quoted regarding crime reduction in "shall carry states" is from the FBI annual crime stats, since you feel free to question both my accuracy and integrity in your point two.
tlrtraveller, you will continue to make excuses and slant anything and everything to your way of thinking, so go for it, you are on a roll. I personally could not give two cents if the USA did something or nothing, it is their Country, and if they want to arm everyone to protect themselves from each other internally, it is their right to do so, what a scary Country it is if that is the case. Everyone there going around armed and not trusting anyone else, even their own government I just find it fascinating the way they are going about that, and many other things............it makes great news, and good entertainment...... And, Full marks for you reading the Howard interview, and picking out little things to further your arguement rather than showing the whole text here, so very typical, keep up the good work............... lol ...................
I agree 100%, the British did it to the Aborigines, when they colonised Australia. The Spanish did it to ,.........I don't know how many Countries. And there is more, too much more.:(
I'd trust a homeless pregnant filipina prostitute and her pimp with my life savings before I'd trust my government.....or any other government with the same.
hmmm, you talk about mental health, so, may I ask if your personal discharge from the Military was voluntary retirement, or......... a Section 8 ?.................. as it used to be called, not sure what the current section or name is, but I am sure you know ?:D
Got that right, especially a government that was predominantly elected by the lowest denominator of society. One that chooses there own selfish desires over those of the whole country. It takes a special talent for elected officials of the U.S. government to screw up one of the largest and most successful countries on the face of the planet! Why should they be trusted? Trust is earned, and not automatic! As much as the 2nd amendment gives Americans the right to protect themselves, it was written to guarantee citizens the right to protect themselves from a government bent on tyranny. That is what it is all about. Read the history books, and know that the founding fathers had the King of England on their mind when the Constitution was written.
