They used to say " you can only count true friends, on one Hand"

Bearing this in Mind the 1/4 things, means something. View attachment 10680

Jack, poverty is often measured in the west by comparison with the living standards of those around you. There is financial poor, food poor, material poor and emotional poor. I've lived through all four during an era of acute austerity. I grew up in orphanages, Dr. Barnardo's Homes, during the 40's and 50's. Our playgrounds were often East London bomb sites, there was not one penny that could be spared to be spent frivolously, and the bare necessities were just that - essentials with no frills. The food was good but not plentiful, there was rarely enough to go round to fill us up. Hunger was ever present. I was 6 1/2 years old before I tasted my first ice cream, on Coronation Day 1953, because of the shortage of milk and sugar which was post-war rationed. But emotional poor can be one of the biggest heartaches to a child. To hear others at school speak of mums and dads, brothers and sisters and aunts and uncles would often create feelings of awkwardness amongst us, as we could not speak of the same. But if also forged a sense of survival, to make the best of what you have, and to be creative with even meagre supplies, which can stand you in good stead later in life, even though we didn't realise it at the time. I'm pretty sure it was also the breeding ground for a sense of humour. Most of our clothes came from the government war surplus stores. It's difficult going to school when you're 6 years old dressed like a Japanese admiral. :p
The transition from relative poverty to 27 years of military life was a cakewalk, then into the Diplomatic Service and finally creating successful businesses was quite a step from threadbare beginnings. From acute hunger and handmedown clothes in childhood, to scarlet finery and state banquets much later in life, I feel fortunate enough to have started at the very bottom and known both ends of the spectrum. That said, you never lose sight of where and how it all began, which tends to instil in you a need to be a giver rather than a taker, so I echo your sentiment Jack, in that "it's nice to help where and when you can, and hope that it's appreciated".

    Meant for Kiddies but ....................

 There are days, that make your blood boil, there are Posts that upset you, Threads that make you Angry,
some, can make you want to cry

But it is a Forum and if we all, followed this simple Kiddys rule, it might get a little friendlier when things seem to get out of hand. View attachment 11019
