That quote is by English philosopher Francis Bacon, who was around long before The Wall Street Journal.
The last 2 white men to see Custer alive and also be close enough to hear him, were Daniel Kanipe and John Martin aka Giovanni Martini. Kanipe took a verbal message to the pack train and Martin took a written message to Benteen. Hence being sent on those errands saved both their lives. I believe it was Kanipe who overheard Custer say just before riding back: "Hurrah boys, we've got them! We'll finish them up and then go home to our station." GAC was plenty confident before the outset of the battle. IMO, the most famous Marine was Manila John Basilone. My favorite Marine however was Smedley Butler

" I hope I never ridicule what is wise or good. Follies and nonsense, whims and inconsistencies do divert me, I own, and I laugh at them whenever I can."~ Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice
"Every war when it comes, or before it comes, is represented not as a war but as an act of self-defense against a homicidal maniac".- George Orwell
"All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume." - Noam Chomsky
