Ah ! Remember the days well Jack, when you used a wooden "mushroom" to darn socks. I was one of 60 kids in an orphanage (Dr. Barnardo's), and most of our clothes at the time came from war surplus. It's not funny when you're 6 years old going to school dressed like a Japanese admiral.
I remember my brother and I being stylish in surplus USAF flightline jumpsuits. I didn't realize at the time that I outranked my brother. As to the socks, I remember a cartoon with two men in a gym changing room and one man saying to the other, you are a lucky man, your wife staples socks much neater than my wife does.
