Well I can hardly believe it... I fly out of Los Angeles for the Philippines in exactly 2 weeks! :D I have arranged a Vonage Telephone (VOIP) account with a phone number local to where I currently live in New Mexico, USA. This will allow my friends and family to call me toll free (I pay 14.95usd a month) and I get 500 outgoing minutes to call anywhere in the States for no additional charge (figured folks might like this info). The one requirement for getting good phone service is a fast internet connection. Can anyone recommend a reliable and truly high speed internet service provider in Dumaguete?

I am very excited. See you soon, woohoo!

    simple answer... NO

It also depends where you live.
I have a globe broadband and can donwload with upto 360 k/sec
but not on a saturday afternoon when all Pinoys chatting and playing games online...
Smart is wireless and way slower,

IT Outlook is no comment... Just put "Dumaguete IT Outlook" into google and read the results. On top the installation is sh... expensive.

depending where yo live and what service is available

    cheers

Thanks Rhoody... I miss my Youtube and was never a very patient guy to begin with. Does anyone have an opinion of who is running the fastest download speeds in the city at the public cafes ?

Funny you've mentioned about Vonage Telephone.... my nephew from
Chicago has just arrived in Dipolog City and brought another unit of Vonage Phone, so my family can contact America free and they've added my phone number here in the Uk. The only thing in my side, I can't fone them for free but what I can do is to text them first and they will fone me up straight away.

As many of my friends in Europe have good connections I just use Skype to call them. I have globe-connection and either Skype or even Yahoo - messenger voicecall is working really fine. In my old Job we did almost all communication with our Agents via those two options.

    cheers

we have a vonage line in south cebu and one in korea - the one in rural south cebu is off and on for incoming calls and we cant make outgoing calls at all. We cant seem to figure out what the problem is -the one in korea works fine.
we have globe broadband (1000 peso/month) but there is a 3000 peso/month buisness option that may work better - we just cant afford it - by the way, our vonage is costing us $24.95 a month at each location but it includes unlimited free calls to anywhere in the states and to some european countries.

Thanks for the input. I also use Skype and Yahoo to communicate with my gf there in Dumaguete but it seems hit or miss depending on her connection speed at the moment. The reason I decided on Vonage is because my mother is not very computer savvy but she sure knows how to use a telephone. I'm hoping that it will work as Vonage advertises and that she can simply dial my local number and it will ring at my home in Dumaguete. My fingers are crossed. BTW, I opted for the $14.95 plan as I understand that incoming calls don't use up minutes and I can't imagine spending even 500 minutes a month on the phone when there are SML's and pool matches around town.
