I've read all the scientific studies on how MSG is not bad for you. And maybe they are correct. MSG is not bad for you. But it still makes my heart pump wildly, even if I think the meal I just ate doesn't contain MSG, and it really does contain MSG, it always causes my heart to beat wildly for the rest of the day anyway. When I return to the restaurant and ask them to see what flavor enhancers they use, of course MSG is the main ingredient, even though they had told me they don't use MSG before I ate the meal. One local entrapraneur swore he didn't use MSG and went to the kitchen go retrieve a packet of what they do use to prove it. and sure enough, MSG was the second most ingredient in the package. So he told me he would quit using it cuz he now knows and wants to only serve pure food. Okay, so I dropped by for lunch soon after, and enjoyed a great meal. But half an hour later, on my motorbike, I noticed my heart freaking out and realized the cause immediately.
I have no problem, that I'm aware of, eating salt. And I love soy sause, and even use the common local soy sauce
available that contains MSG if pure soy sauce is not available. But I will purchase only White Horse soy sauce in the stores, as it doesn't contain MSG and tastes much better.
Every time I consume MSG in the quantities that these local restaurants use it, my heart go bonkers, my lips tingle, and I spend the rest of the day or night recuperating from heart palpitations afterwards.
I know, from personal observations and conversations, that many tourists and foreigners living in Negros, would also prefer avoiding MSG. I just don't understand why everybody here has to use so much MSG in their food preparations. It's like whoever uses the most will get the most return business. It's nuts and shows they really have little concern with serving pure unadulterated food.

To Wrye83. You asked me what proportions are considered massive. The answer is: if it is the first or second ingredient listed on the package, that is my definition of massive.

You can tell very little from the order in which ingredients are listed. The first ingredient could be 99.5% of the contents and the following ingredients would make up less than 0.5% of the rest. They don't tell you what percentage of an ingredient is used on the packet. Also, it would depend how much of the specific ingredient makes it into your food. It is a bit misleading to call it a "massive" amount when in fact any given seasoning is likely much less than 1% of your total intake for that meal.

I did state that people with medical conditions could be sensitive to the stuff. They are still doing studies on that and I wouldn't be surprised if they did find that a very small percentage of people are in fact sensitive to it. Again, I don't think it should be made illegal or banned by the government because a small percentage of people have a reaction. It should be treated as any other allergy or sensitivity: it's on the people with the problem to look out for it and businesses should be free use or not use the ingredient.

Obviously Wrye83 has some sort of affinity for MSG and will battle with me on this subject until the cows come home. My purpose here is not to start an argument as to whether MSG is good or bad for humans, or whether or not msg should be banned or not, I could care less. I promote the free use of any and all substances that any and/or all persons desire to use. It is fine with me if everybody in a Dumaguete and all of PH consume all the msg produced in the world.
My only concern and only question to this group is if any one person is aware of any single restaurant where msg is NOT used in the food for sale in Dumaguete. I'm certainly not trying to outlaw msg or say it is bad for humans.
By the way, I just read on a bag of Tostitos, bought at Robinsons grocery in Dumaguete, that it contains NO ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, NO PRESERVATIVES, and NO MSG. So obviously I'm not the only person on planet earth that is concerned about consuming MSG. Please continue to consume whatever additives you like in your diet and don't worry about me or any other concerned citizen taking away your right to enjoy all the MSG or other food additives your heart desires. I only ask that you allow myself and other concerned citizens to search, without argument, for locations that don't prepare their food for sale with MSG or other additives.. Thank you

    Ridiculous.

I'm sure that most restos have at least one dish that does not contain processed MSG. Best of luck in your search concerned citizens. :D
