Not sure how many members here have a business but I had a scam/virus pop up in my email with someone pretending to be the IRS.

From: complaints@irs.gov

Dear business owner,

A criminal complaint has been filled against your company.
Your company is being accused of trying to commit tax evasion schemes.
The full text of the complaint file ( PDF type ) can be viewed on the IRS website, by visiting the following link: (Link deleted since it was a virus)

An official response from your part is required, in order to take further action.
Please review the charges brought forward in the complaint file, and contact us as soon as possible by :

I was curious what the file was so I clicked on the link. Email said it was a pdf but turned out to be a zipped "pif" file. If you see it.....and you run Windows, don't click the file. Plus, I'm pretty sure the IRS don't send emails for criminal investigations.....and if they did I'm pretty sure they would know my name and my company's name.

I get about 20 of these scams/viruses a day but most are such obvious bullshit they aren't even worth posting about. I could see how someone might click the link on this one since the letters IRS can make a person not think clearly.

People generally associate the name "Internal Revenue Service" (IRS) with "trouble" (i.e., rarely does an envelope from the IRS bear good news), so messages that appear to issue from the IRS usually grab a recipient's attention and are therefore excellent bait for phishing schemes and other scams. The key point to keep in mind to protect oneself from this form of fraud is that neither the IRS nor the Department of Justice (DOJ) sends out unsolicited e-mails or ask taxpayers to supply detailed personal and financial information (including PINs and passwords) via e-mail.
