I just finished reading the article....When we visited this summer, I had heard that the Negros Oriental governor had made an agreement with the local NPA about setting up a biodiesel plant in that area. Sounds like a minority group of the local NPA was not satisified with the decision, and asked for outside assistance for protests against its development.

Right now, it sounds like they are arriving as protesters. That area is pretty far away, inland from Dumaguete. You wouldn't even notice.

If I had travel plans, this would not disrupt them. That's my own personal feelings. But it's a good idea to be aware, and reading the local newspaper helps!

    DWY,

When I first went to the Philippines the Us government had just published their annual "Kano" warning to stay out of Mindanao.

I ignored it! This was in 2005.

I arrived in Davao on the 12th of February and two days later they had the "valentines day" bombings. One in Davao and the bus terminal, one in Manila and I can't remember where the other one was.

I was in the V-hire terminal just a block or so down the road. Waiting for the van to fill up. I guess luckily for me I missed the bombing by about an hour. I was already on my way deep into mindanao when the bombs went off.

There had also been a bombing in General Santos a month or so before I went to Mindanao.

Why am I telling you this? It's simple.

I don't condone carelessness with your life I do advise folks to put things in perspective.

Is there any reason why the rebels would single you out of all the other foreigners aka Kano in Negros?

If you really can't answer this seriously...then your probably going to have a d*mn good time.

Be careful, be wise, but have fun!

    DWY,

as what i have observe, i haven't heard in dumaguete or Negros as whole that a foreigner was harm or kidnap by NPA's,tell me if i'm wrong, indeed foreigners are their friends or shall we say they love foreigner.(its even the foreigner who is under surveillance from the police because some are supporting the insurgency, heheheheh)

60 or 100 NPA re-inforcement from the neighboring island is not a security concern for expats. dont mind it, live your normal and enjoyable life in dumaguete.
