    Before I jump into hiring someone to drill me a well and install a tank and everything that implies, can experienced members please suggest a list of Do's and Don'ts to consider? I would like to use the water for a sizeable front and back yard plus vegetable garden and for cleaning the car and backup for interior cleaning when Bacong has one of its frequent water outages. Thanks

    Having owned several public water systems.......

    and having used wells on my own land,
    let me state the obvious:

    The key to a successful well-based system is adequacy of the water supply down in the hole. Once you have found the water, the rest is simple mechanics. You can pump the water out of the well into a tank elevated on some kind of tower, then use simple gravity flow to your hoses and the like. Or you can pump the water from the well into a pressure tank so as to have greater pressure coming out of your hoses than is likely with gravity flow.

    About the only way you can gauge the probability of finding sufficient water in the ground BEFORE you dig or drill is to canvass your neighbors to see if any of them have wells and what kind of experience they have had. People who dig or drill wells in a particular area often have enough experience to know what you are likely to encounter. But they have nothing to lose if they end up drilling a dry hole. They still get paid.

    Some barangays have access to water from a different supply source than the cities. If you are lucky, your barangay might be one of those and you may be able to purchase water from them and not have to bother with a well. Ask the barangay officials.

    Some well people maintain they kind find water with a water witch. I don't put any faith in them at all. Experienced too many failures.

    Good luck

    Thanks for the info. I have city water but two problems: they apparently have a small motor that drives the pump from the well up in the hills and sometimes it craps out and no replacement (5 days no water) or ongoing maintenance or problems and shuts down (nearly daily) so a well will provide backup.

    Water

    Why not build a big enough storage tank with pump that is connected to the mains water. If it goes down for a few days you have a weeks backup. That was an answer without really knowing if it can be done, saves on a well :smile: Like to see the replies to see if my theory is right :D

    appy_ammer, I have seen several systems like that and several that are filled with rain water. The only problem i have seen is that water bugs that look like a cock roach always appear. It's not so bad as long as it isn't used for drinking water.

    A little chlorine and a net to occasionally skim the top seems to work good.

    As one of the other posters suggested to catch rain water in a cistern. It will be better water for your plants and for washing the car becuase it won't have the minerals that well water will probably have that cause spots on your car when washed with well water. Rainwater is much better for plants than well water.

    You might want to add a small amount of chlorine to prevent algae and it will probably need cleaning once in a while.

    1) Make sure your well is a loooooooong way away from any septic system including your neighbors.

    2) When you think you have drilled deep enough go at least another 20' or so, especially in the "wet" season.

    3) Tank size should be enough to last you 2-3 days at bare minimum.

    4) Check your pm's
