I had neither seen, nor heard of, sepak takraw until yesterday at Robinson's Mall. I found this sport very fascinating and a lot of fun to watch!! The aerial spinners/kickers are AMAZING!! Here is a youtube video I found which shows the agility of these players.

YouTube - Sepaktakraw: The best killer in the world.

Sepak takraw is a very good sport but only applicable to the few. You need to be agile and flexible in this kind of sport and light also to pull yourself to the air. Its a great sport and actually it is a national sport in the philippines. But basketball is still the number 1 sport in the philippines. Anyone can play old or young, sometimes my friend who has an inborn defect whose left leg is shorter but still he can manage to play. Basketball seemed to be the sport of the masses more than sepak takraw here in the philippines. Just for the love of the sport we like to play even as asians we are shorter than most westerners or americans.

Its mainly a asian based sport. Alot of Thai, Malay, Indonesians mainly play it. I didnt know that the Philippines has it as a national sport! Its normally a bamboo/rattan ball but its dosent last long so they have now gone to plastic. I have a few balls myself and kick a little, but think I can do a spinning reverse backflip and kick the ball over the net? No way! I might pull my spine out of place!

Its such a lovely and different sport to watch. We have International competitions here in Darwin, Australia, every 2 years, called the ARAFURA GAMES. All asian nationalities come to meet and play...darn, I missed the event in robinsons by one month! I came back to Australia at teh beginning of June and am planning my next trip in December....oh how I miss the Philippines lifestyle....
