I'm an old boy now , I started work in 1963 in South London as a fishmonger . We wrapped in grease proof paper and newspaper. All shoppers supplied there own trolleys ( wicker baskets on wheels ) or shopping bags . We supplied paper carrier bags ( advertising Broadway Fisheries printed on the sides ) at 1p each .
Then came the supermarkets, they're the ones started the whole sorry episodes of plastic packing and free carrier bags.
They and they alone are responsible for the present situation , now they have the brass balls to charge for plastic bags , weak government policy allows this irony to proceed .
