The best learning happens outside a classroom. Personally, I think the classroom becomes a barrier to learning if it takes up too much time. Teach the kids how to follow their curiosity to learn what interests them, not having some other curriculum crammed down their throats.

Jack,
We changed schools so that our son would be going to the same school as our niece (she is in HS now). It was a larger school and the boy just has not done well with the larger class sizes and his grades are not what we expect from him. He will be transferred back to the smaller school for next year and he will attend summer school. Some of it has to do with him having a bit too much energy and starting to act the fool a bit, the smaller classroom size had more interaction. As parents we want the best for the kids and I've explained to him in great detail why he will go to summer school and what our expectations are for him.
Our niece actually does pretty well in school but as a 14 year old she was having issues with getting up on time which was mostly her texting her friends at all hours...she has to turn her phone over each evening until morning and that has seemed to help quite a bit. She will also spend her entire summer vacation in the village with family so she should feel some motivation for the upcoming school year.

Good article Jack. At our small school, we had a PTA meeting this week in which one of the subjects covered was to combine some different age group classes. The reason being, and I believe it, the younger kids can learn from the older kids without disrupting the older kid's learning.
Your article articulates some good reasons for summer school necessity. Daily monitoring and parent-teacher meetings may nip some of those reasons in the bud before summer school becomes a requirement. A summer break is good for both the kids as well as the parents.- Agree x 2

What a question One would say but as parents we should consider the possibility that they (Our Child/Children) May need this for any or all the Reason contained in the Article I have put a link in for at the bottom of this Post.
Things are not so bad for our daughter now as she has progressed steadily and her Grades are better each Term. We were at Friends the other night and the subject of School grades came up. Of course it is a touchy Subject in that many Parents will take exception to thoughts that their child would ever need need any extra tuition.
What we always did when our Princess was younger was to look and study her report cards throughout the year and about now, FEB and with Summer coming on, was to see where if anywhere she was falling behind. Then we would pursue the Areas that needed a Little or a lot of tightening up
We are now going to help Azons niece to get her 2 into summer school as their cards are showing a need for some extra brain feeding.
Just a Thought but we (as Parents) all think our offspring's are way beyond the average when in fact , there are occasions that Parents miss the parts that are lacking and the Lower than expected grades.
Just an Article for any out there that might like to give this a Thought, we did for a few years and it has paid Off.
In Addition, Our Daughter tells us it was fun and she was never Bored and we have to admit, she was less troublesome during those long weeks at Home. A bored Child can be PINTA Yes?

Summer school is not for the entire 3 month break so he will get to stay at his grandparent's house in the village, play with his cousins and swim in the river everyday when summer school is not in session. What I want him to understand is to take school seriously and behave while in class. It is really about self discipline.
I'm pretty sure most of us will agree that most things we learned in school have never been applied to "real life" day to day or in our chosen professions. I will be the first person to admit I have learned much more in the field than I ever did in a classroom. Why did I have to fold my underwear in 6" squares in basic training? Attention to detail and discipline.
