The Sin Tax Reform Republic Act (RA) 10351 is in some shops in Dumaguete already in place. I am not talking about overpriced town-bicycles for short-term rental, but about the tax increase of on my basic life supporting goods like beer and cigarettes.

While it is supposed to be in place 1-1-2013 we are here ahead of time in Dumaguete and 10 packs of Marlboro Light went up from 312php to 480php at Ricky's.

Here some numbers what price increase we can expect over the next few years:

For cigarettes with a net retail price of less than 11.50, tax rate increases are as follows:

    2013 - P12
    2014 - P17
    2015 - P21
    2016 - P25
    2017 - P30

For cigarettes with a net retail price of 11.50 or more, the tax per pack are as follows:

    2013 - P25
    2014 - P27
    2015 - P28
    2016 - P29
    2017 - P30

For fermented liquor with a net retail price of less than P50.60, tax rates are as follows:
    2013 - P15
    2014 - P17
    2015 - P19
    2016 - P21
    2017 - P23.50

For fermented liquor worth P50.60 or more:
    2013 - P20
    2014 - P21
    2015 - P22
    2016 - P23
    2017 - P23.5

    For distilled spirits:
    2013 - P20 + 15%
    2014 - P20 + 15%
    2015 - P20 + 20%
    2016 - P21.80 + 20%
    2017 - P21.60 + 20%

The Sin Tax Reform Republic Act (RA) 10351 is supposed to generate billions per year. In numbers:

    2013 – P33.96 billion
    2014 – P42.86 billion
    2015 – P50.630 billion
    2016 – P56.86 billion
    2017 – P64.18 billion

The government hopes that it brings the local population on the track of a healthier life-style.

Another promo I saw today at the same shop really helps to get kids used to cigarettes in early age with a special sale of candy cigarettes:

The Sin Tax Reform Republic Act (RA) 10351 would be the first tax worldwide, which creates healthier people. Wouldn't it be more honest to say: We need money and it is easy to get that from "legal addicts".

I guess I just remain to be a bedroom sinner, with a cigarette "after" a pack lasts two days and a half ... or so.

    Healthy Happy New Year

As long as the only "sins" they are taxing is smoking and drinking I'm doing pretty good.....and I'm a smoker and a drinker.

I guess cigarette smokers will become familiar with a term some of us have been using for years..
"G.Y.O." keeps the incrimination level down, but Im pretty sure that many will know immediately what Im referring to.

I'm all for this tax. Great idea. Having seen off friends and co-workers dead of lung cancer....it is a very grisly painful way to die. No fun at all. I quit in the 70's when I found smoking affecting my fitness as a young Marine. I'm sure it's no coincidence - but that fitness level increased substantially within months of quitting. Alcohol is way too cheap too. How many thousands of murders and deaths does it cause in the Philippines.....probably even more than down here in Australia..Anyway, good call by the government - hope they spend it wisely for the people.
