It always cracks me up with the big brother thing. People really think they are so important as to think the government actually cares what they are doing/saying. The average American is nothing to the government. Big business runs the US, the people mean nothing. People don't understand how much man power it would take to watch every single citizen. Yeah, there are programs to listen to conversations but they search for keywords and do the listen to who went to what family reunion at the park. Unless you talk about assassinations/bombs/overthrowing the government you really have nothing to worry about......and if you are talking g about those things they should be listening. Google and Facebook is far more intrusive than" big brother".

I agree to a point. Most of us are not under any active surveillance nor is the government much aware of us being alive. The problem is they have the ability, resources and power to zero in on any citizen that becomes a threat either real or perceived threat. As a poster said, just say a few choice keywords in you emails, texts or phone conversations and Echelon, the multicountry international police monitor of most communications, and you will be sifted out for scrutiny. Even those who have not advocated violence but are vociferous and radical in their political views are targeted and punished. Look what they did to Bobby Fisher (sp?) He was a loud mouth with alot of angry rhetoric against the US.
Was he a real threat? No way. Least they did not assassinate him like they would do in many countries.

In answer to the other poster asking me what I would do about it. I'd say a good start would be to get rid of the electoral college and abolish political parties or at least stop letting money dictate who runs for office. Then maybe we'd get some real leaders in their with creative and novel ideas.
The problem with the USA is that the people in power have sold their souls to the almighty dollar.
But you know the people get the government they deserve, and when you look at the average American, that does not portend well for the USA

It certainly is a power that can be abused and I personally believe it violates privacy rights (somewhat). Search warrants should be a requirement after information is gathered to follow up on any investigation. I'm not sure on the process they currently use, but I'm sure it's shady.

Agree with this. The problem with democracy is that everyone gets a vote, and most people are idiots.....so yeah, they get what they deserve.

And are you talking about Bobby Fischer the chess player? The one who played chess in Yugoslovia breaking a US embargo against the country? The same Fischer that had the IRS looking for back taxes? Hmm, yeah, the government had NO reason to be looking for him. Him talking bad about Jews and praising Hitler probably didn't help him out any but it wasn't the reason for them looking for him.

It takes more than brains. It takes big money, power and influence. Look how far the 99% protesters got - nowhere. Mainstream media painted them as freaks and idiots by spending way too much coverage time on their 'fringe element'. The main message was lost or buried.
