I’ve received numerous messages via email and on Facebook saying that my head should be bashed in again in the same way that the security guards at Lee SuperPlaza bashed my head into the cement 2 days ago, when as a result I ended up in the hospital with a concussion and blood coming from the top of head. The photo on Facebook that was taken yesterday with Doctor Voltaire Alojado, when the management of Lee SuperPlaza brought me to Medical Centre Hospital for a CT scan of my brain. Before two days ago I hadn’t had an epileptic seizure in 22 months. Since the Lee SuperPlaza incident I’ve had 3 seizures in 2 days.



My personal doctor and friend is Steven E. Locke, M.D., an associate professor at Harvard University (slockemd@verizon.net). Here is his message to me, sent to me this morning:

I’ve received phone calls (that I recorded) demanding that I leave the country, that it will arranged that I will have to leave the country, and that Happy doesn’t deserve to be with and they will take him away from me. The same messages are on Facebook and my email. I’m sure that you’ve seen them. When I was in the Holy Child Hospital at 3:15 AM today after suffering a seizure, someone came to the ER at the hospital claiming that he was a Judge, saying that I should leave the country, and that I was a disgrace to my country, Canada (also recorded).



I have been teaching Assistance Dog training and promoting anti-discrimination and rights of access to public places and all modes of transportation for Persons with a Disability for more than 30 years. In no country was I ever assaulted. During the past 10 years I have visited 17 countries with Happy, always at my side in the cabin of the airplane wherever I traveled. I lived in Ecuador for 4 years at the request and invitation of the vice-president of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, who is in a wheelchair and became student and a friend. Call or email him and say that Happy says hello. I’ve started 7 institutes for the training of Assistance Dogs for Persons with a Disability in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Israel, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador and Chile. Call or email any veterinarian in any city of any of those countries. They have all heard of me. Call or email them and say that Happy says hello.



I was a consultant for General Borbon, the head of the Air Force of Colombia, for their service dog training program. He also has 2 of the 31 Golden Retriever puppies that I had on my farm in Rionegro. Call or email him and say that Happy says hello. I consulted for the National Police canine squad in Medellin, Colombia. Call or email them and say that Happy says hello. I consulted in Concepcion, Chile for the “Policia de Investigacion (PDI)” which is the equivalent of the FBI of the United States, for their service dog training program. Call or email them and say that Happy says hello.



The national TV station of Nicaragua, which by the way is the second poorest country in the world, ran two 30 minute documents on the projects I was implementing there. Call or email them and say that Happy says hello. By the way, in Nicaragua, Chile, Ecuador and Colombia, if you’re driving a motorcycle without a helmet the Police impound your motorcycle. If the lights on your car or your motorcycle don’t work, The Police impound your car or motorcycle. If you don’t respect pedestrian crossings (those white lines at most corners of most streets) you could lose your driver’s license. Call any mall, restaurant, bus company or airline in any of the 17 countries and say that Happy says hello. They all know me or have heard of me. Among my Facebook photos you will find my certificate in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (1977).



There are many Persons with a Disability in the Philippines who could live a much more and satisfying life if they could be accompanied by a certified Assistance Dog. Blind people, deaf people, people with epilepsy, people with anxiety disorders such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, children with Down's syndrome or any of the Autism Spectrum Disorders. Unfortunately in the Philippines they are denied access with an Assistance Dog even though the Magna Carta for Persons with a Disability explicitly protects their right to live as much of a normal life as possible. The Philippines was one of the first countries to vote in favor of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on 10 December 1948, the day the UDHR was adopted In Paris. The Philippines is signatory to a number of United Nations human rights treaties, including the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, ratified on 15 April 2008.



How wonderful that so many people of Dumaguete are threatening to separate me from Happy, bash my head in again, and throw me bodily of the country, and are so proud of the reputation of their city of Dumaguete and are upset that I am embarrassing businesses who deny the rights of Access by Persons with a Disability, all because I am championing the rights of citizens of the Philippines that are Persons with a Disability. Philippine Law is Philippine Law is Philippine Law. Claiming ignorance of Philippine Laws is no excuse for not respecting them and abiding by them.



They are the laws of the Philippines as well as International Law.



Dumaguete is a wonderful place. I love living here. The friendliest people that I have ever met. I plan to stay here until I die. Everyone has my address and my phone numbers, so I’m quite transparent. I can’t be without Happy for one minute, especially after having 3 seizures in 2 days. I will still have to eat in restaurants, go to the bank, to National Bookstore in Robinsons Mall, buy clothes at Lee SuperPlaza, and take the bus. I’ll do my best to keep a low profile and not disturb anyone, but it won’t be easy. I don’t have anything more to say.



Happy just advised me that I'm going to have another seizure. I'm going to find someplace safe to lie down. I thank God that I have Happy. Check my YouTube videos for Happy's birthday last Sunday, and you'll see how much I love him. Until later...

Miguel, whilst you are taking time out of your Day to C&P this ongoing Drama, I would think you have a vested Interest, One way or the Other. How about you give us your Opinion on things, just so we know, where you stand in all this.

Do you not think, this would be the right thing to Do?

We don't want this to get too ugly do we?

 

In my opinion this guy mark Cohen needs to pack his bags and head off to another country! Philippines is not for him,
When he first arrived I saw this guy, he had the remains of a black eye and been in town one day,
His face book is a brand new account, and his website link is not working any website,
The guy has alterour motives I am sure of it, and I also think he is very bad for other foreigners there in Dumaguete, guy is totally on a mission of what I am not sure,
I would steer well clear of him, and after he tells one side of a half truth we read here from a eye witness he started another drama by pushing a guard,
Why on earth has he chosen Dumaguete of all the Philippines? Maybe he believes he will get away with acting like a child there?
He really lays on the b.s in my eyes.
I don't think he has done anything positive for anyone and the poor dog will probably be the one that gets put to sleep the way the handler is acting.
Sooner or later he is going to really p*ss the wrong person off if not already done so

Just a question after reading all of the above , why would someone with a well known and documented medical condition continually put themselves in a situation through their antics and behaviour to bring on a seizure , this person would have to have an ulterior motive other than just their "said" cause , ATTENTION SEEKING DISORDER .

I would hope that this has now worn thin with the authority's in Dumaguete and that he is asked to move on , it has got to be one of the most childish , pitiful displays of character that has been on show for the public to see , ever. It appears that apart from the medical condition he portrays to have that there are far more serious problems that he has not seemed to address .

He simply needs to be in his own country where he can have ALL of his deficiencies catered for , OR has he worn his welcome out there as well. It is embarrassing to the Expat community each day this ridiculous saga unfolds , as for those that were so vocal in their support for this originally , what are their thoughts now ? Are we still a bunch of sackless expats , for having a further foresight on this than others .

I would like also to here from Robert K , a respected member of the forum with a lateral thinking quality that certainly surpasses myself and some others . Let's all be realistic on this , and we can do it without being bias and sticking to any original thoughts , what about NOW that these other "events" involving "Marky" have come to light . Read the thread in it's entirety before making comment.

I was also quite surprised that the most vocal of the vocal supporting this "gentleman" has gone so quiet and abandoned an opinion? Perhaps his vocal chords were also removed when his sack was. I have not heard a peeee-p.

 

If this (and I am sure it will) is put too many times in front of The Dumaguete Boss (The Mayor) His departure( Mr Cohen) will be very Quick. The man (the Mayor) puts a Lot of Effort in Keeping Dumaguete, the City of "Gentle People" I don't think he will Tolerate this Too long.
People seem to have tried, to be gentle with Mr Cohen, at Fist. Now all this.

Wow weeee... just one man-sometimes dreams become nightmares

I am not sure how many expats there are in the Dumaguete area... but I am amazed that one single man, Mark Cohen, can cause so much drama and chaos in the one area so fast for his own personal agenda. Although Vladimir Putin seems to be achieving that level of reputation in another part of the world , but Putin has a lot more resources behind him. However if "alesypalsy" is correct and he arrived with (or soon after earned) a black eye, maybe Mr Cohen has more experience causing mayhem than he gives himself credit for in his crusade.

He seems intelligent but if he really was intelligent he would have done more research on how the Philippines government, business, everyday people and expats have learned to live together in what is the many times called the "friendliness" place in the Philippines. A little research on civil disobedience in the Philippines may have given him a glimpse of a what would lie ahead for him, and even point out a better path for him. We all know the systems are not idealistically perfect here, but we do survive in some level of harmony while making progress. It is a different world here, and just because they are no windmills to have crusade attacks against, does not mean running amok causing drama and chaos is the answer for progress here. Obviously he is a crusader, if not in metathreatre nature, similar to Don Quixote, if he allows himself to risk his health to have "seizures" here due to his activities (or maybe it is just another drama thing) , then I must have some admiration for him for the risks he takes, if they are real[/U][/U]. Risks I would not personally take myself.

I am also appreciate Mr Cohen is Canadian so some poor American or other expat nationality does not get blamed for all that has been credited to him.

However I would like to think he would not risk my health, or the friendly attitude of the Dumaguete community for his own benefit with his campaign of mayhem.... I can dream can't I? That Mr Cohen's situation does not become a nightmare for everyone?

Quite right Dave but if someone in Filipino Authority, does not do Something about the issue, I can see the whole thing escalating to a Provincial and/or a National one. We have enough BOI problems without raising more issues to give them Ammunition to make things any harder.

He Obviously chose Dumaguete as the least Obstacle City to try things on. He Got that wrong, which is why I believe he has taken the steps to go international on FB and Elsewhere. No moral Fibre, No Scruples and certainly No feeling for his
fellow Man (Foreigners) in a country where we are Guests. His Foreigner Support is diminishing so rapidly, his Credibility is virtually Zilch. As we can see his Credibility in the local Eyes is - (minus)

I believe Still, there is more to this than meets the Eye!
