The problem with bombing civilian targets is you will inevitably end up killing innocent people. Killing innocent people feeds the enemy's propaganda and creates more hatred from surviving family...and then they join the fight against those that murdered their relatives. (If some group wrongly/unnecessarily killed my entire family you had better believe I would be doing everything I could to make sure those responsible were brought to justice and I would be willing to join a group, even if I didn't agree with their political/religious ideology, if I thought they could help me obtain that justice.)

The only real way, IMO, to fight terrorism/gangs/criminals is education, economic opportunities and adequate health care (specifically mental health). Many of the foot soldier in these groups are just people that a.) fight for a paycheck to feed their family because there are few options for honest/safe work, b.) have been converted to a more fundamental version of their religion because they can't read their own religious text nor have they been taught to think critically, c.) have an undiagnosed psychological disorder that leaves their minds vulnerable to corruption or d.) a combination of any of the above.

Those in charge of these extremist groups are not stupid and know that education and investments severely hurt their recruiting efforts. This is why they so aggressively go after schools that educate and companies that provide honest work so fiercely.

Like almost every problem in the world, this is not something you can bomb or kill your way out of. I don't believe the vast majority of people are "good" or "evil", most believe they are fighting for a just cause. The problem is a result of complex circumstances and cannot be solved by a simple/easy solution.

I'll step out on a limb here.
He will get the U.S. et al to give him the moon and the stars to keep China and Russia at bay.
He wasn't born under a mango tree.
Look at his statements about human rights. If he agreed to follow acceptable norms the druggies would not be in fear.
He's getting what he wants. He can apologize later.

As they say its better to seek forgiveness then to ask permission.

I see the Philippines as a needed ally for the US in the region as long as the US see's China and North Korea as a threat. In the case of something their needs to be a port available and someplace to base SE Asian operations from. Japan is really limiting the US military in a number of ways going through Japan and IF something happened Japan would be China's first target likely hit before anyone knew what was going on. South Korea isn't practical as they only really care about keeping North Korea at bay. Philippines however would be easy to manipulate and control if sh*t actually went down and the people would be demanding the government do everything to accomodate the US if it protected them when it was needed.

I see the Philippines struggling against the reins of the US and favoring China like a teenager who is wanting to rebel against the parents and as such also hangs with friends they know mommy and daddy won't approve of.

How many times in history has this "bomb them all" approach actually worked against people fighting on their own grounds?

I can respect Duterte for this myself. I see it as the little guy on the playground that for years has been bossed around by the big boys to the advantage of the big boys and now the little guy is fighting back and saying he won't play that game anymore. For years the US while helping the Philippines has also played the Philippines as well as the US does all around the world but under the current administration its gone to far trying to force and blackmail the little guy into doing what they want. The US and Obama admin along with the rest of the west are trying to force liberal ideals on the Philippines that the country really doesn't agree with. Stuff like criminals having rights don't go over well with the families that have suffered at the hands of criminals and in the Philippines a LOT of families have suffered at the hands of criminals even cutting out the politician criminals. The US sure doesn't seem to care about the lives and families of the non criminals that are harmed and ruined but they are all up in arms to protect that which destroys.

Further they keep spewing this 3k number of deaths related to the war on drugs and now saying its over 3k while so many of those don't even seem tied to drugs or drug killings. They even shouldn't be counting a single death were the police go to arrest and the drug dealers start shooting and end up dead as that may be a dead person but not due to drugs but due to shooting at police. Duterte's admin last I heard was saying around 1400-1600 sanctioned drug hits (which includes those of known/suspected dealers the police knew about that wound up dead). The west and US won't accept that many criminals committing murder are also just leaving a sign saying *pusher* hoping to get off yet police are still investigating them as murders.

Ever watched the "Survivor" reality show? Just surviving can be very tough.....and many of the citizens of the Philippines are already just barely doing that. What happens to them when their lives are made even more difficult during the frequent natural disasters that devastate the country? Oh yeah, they die....and death tolls will only grow if they are left to rely solely on the aid and response time of the Philippine government, and Chinese/Russian "promises" aren't all that nutritious for people and don't really make for good building materials. Not really looking out for the little guys by constantly running that big mouth his.
