Stakeholders in NegOr to formulate Prov'l food safety, nutrition network

    DUMAGUETE CITY, April 7 (PIA) -- Representatives from local government units (LGUs), national government agencies, academe and the private sector in Negros Oriental have initially agreed to formulate a provincial food safety and nutrition network to intensify the advocacy on food safety and nutrition in the province.

    This was the result of the first consultative meeting on the formation of the provincial food and safety network recently at the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) office in Dumaguete City.

    The formulation of the network will create an avenue for information sharing and easy access expertise among stakeholders to address food safety and nutrition issues as well as to improve the quality of food products in those aspects.

    DOST-Negros Oriental took the initiative to gather the various stakeholders and hosted the consultative meeting.

    DOST-Negros Oriental provincial director Engr. Gilbert Arbon said, they wanted to know from the stakeholders if it is necessary to establish a food safety and nutrition network as a response to malnutrition problems in the province.

    He also noted that there was a Metro Dumaguete Food Safety and Nutrition Network started by microbiology and food safety expert Dr. Manuel Garcia before but the group became inactive and eventually got dissolved. DOST was a member of the food safety network.
