My wife has been looking at buying a couple lots in Bacolod. Ayala has built an extremely secure subdivision there towards Silay...gated, roving security, fenceline patrols etc and it aint cheap. Some of Bacolod's elite live there and it is a well done project...can't complain. Pool, clubhouse, tennis courts, etc...It would certainly suit our intentions of baseing in the Visayas and travelling around in the PI, region, and world...and then coming back to a house that was still intact. Unfortunately, the diving around Bacolod sucks...anything decent is two hours minimum drive...The press she's been getting about the crimes against expats in Dumaguete for the last year haven't helped. Been almost zero in Bacolod....tell the crims in Duma thanks for stuffing the place up..

Can someone living there come up with subdivisions that are similar to what she's looking at in Bacolod. Otherwise I am stuffed...

6 years ago we were warned by Bacolod hotel staff not to go to the town plaza after dark. Drug users and chance of trouble.

Can't remember the name of the hotel..Bacolod Business Inn maybe? It was on Lacson St.

The park in question was within easy walking distance from the hotel.

That subd doesn't have roving security and fenceline patrols (?!) for no reason. If you're a criminal in Occidental, Bacolod's the best place to go.

They should name the subd Fort Apache.

10 yrs ago these bulk of crimes wasn't known happening in Dumaguete. You can hear it a lot more happening in Cebu .Then slowly through the decade it contaminated Dumaguete and now. Just to explain any place is not immune or cocooned away from crimes. Loose criminals also move around. I don’t think Bacolod has almost zero crime rate. Locals are aware about changes of their times . Bacolod has growing cell phone snatchings ,hold ups, burglaries other crimes on the rise .Infact recent survey shows Negros occidental, including Bacolod counts having the highest number of sexually-related crimes that includes rape compared to other areas.Few murders including what was done by NPAs in escalante nr bacolod last yr too.Multimillion pesos damage of Silay airport construction demolished at one go by these perpetrators last yr. NPA movement is bit stronger in the occidental side too. According to the military they are intensifying their drive of counter info in schools because of some reports they have gathered these people are doing efforts to recruit new members and mostly targeting the children by tricking them to join their cause .But the military has downplayed it their survival tactics as they are loosing out from the battle , their numbers are dwindling. I don’t think Bacolod is long insulated from these problems. We don't hear about them so much unless we dig harder for some news.

    Still Dumaguete for safety...

You can have alternative sites for dwelling in the city and the vicinity, and still have access to nearby scuba diving and stuff...
Criminality has indeed risen a bit. Rest assured, some changes will happen soon. The area is much smaller as compared to Bacolod. All that is needed is political will to address these problems head on. There is a great need to augment the very small military contingent. The city has only eighty (80) uniformed policemen working three (3) shifts! Whew! What can we expect. It is time to give Dumaguete back its monicker of "the city of gentle people", and with concerted action, it can/will happen.

    Tonyrems,
I come from Holland, married a filipina from cebu but she had many families in negros that's why we bought a land near dumaguete,a s we have a plan to build a house there, as I said before the land we bought is not titled (maybe govt. own???)and our atty. advising us not to build a house on it as the government might intervene and our investment will just gone in the wind. Now to late much money been wasted, but still we are looking a titeled land now as we continue our plan to build a house.I will just send you an e-mail privately about your subdivison.

    Hi Kai,

There are many areas available for purposes of building a house. I would like to know your preferences whether it will be in the city, by the beach or in a cool area with a grand view of the mountain on your back and the ocean on the front. One can sell a dream but we both would want the realities at hand. I would appreciate an exhange of info about the matter at hand. I wish you and your darling wife can eventually come for a visit and have a first hand look at the possible properties you'd be interested in.

I am still in the US as of the moment. I will be in Dumaguete next week. I'm glad we met through this site because for the 3 days that I have enrolled in this forum I have come across many nice threads to read and post. As I have said in my initial post, this is so far the best site/forum for Dumaguete and the province. Kudos to the webmaster who is astute and prompt. I would like to make a suggestion though, if I may, that the latest post/reply should be at the top for easier location. More Power to you and thank you...

Oh well, looks like Bacolod is written in cement now...LOL. I'm sure I'll get used to it. Lots of good relatives and friends there, and it's always great fun. Interestingly, an uncle that I get on real well with (he's doing good with the beer drinking lessons I've been giving him), has a branch of his business in Dumaguete (as well as other Visayan locations) and a vacation house in Dumaguete....he's offered the use of it...So it looks like I'll be spending a fair bit of time there....it's a nice drive from Bacolod. Can hardly wait...

I think you're talking about Chicken Ally or Chicken Street, something like that in Goldenfield. Been there a couple years ago..great tucker. There's another popular chicken place, two-story open air restaurant near the Capital lagoon park on Lacson St. Very busy, great chicken too, and prices are fantastic. Usually a lot of students there having a good time.
