Three countries approached the Japanese government to help them build a railway system. These three countries were America, France, and Britain. In the end, Britain won out. In 1872 the first Japanese railway was up and running thanks to the British. A massive network of railways spread out from there, all of which were left-side running. And as we all know, Japan loves their trains. If American or French railways had been built instead, Japan would probably be driving on the right side of the road today.
Why Does Japan Drive on the Left Side of the Road?

Even in escalators, people keep to the left, the ones who want to climb use the right side half. When you meet someone on a narrow trail, you lean to the left.

Only ever seen ONE setup in my life and that was for a guy who was disabled and only had his left leg, so the accelerator pedal was fitted to the left side instead of the right. Apart from that ALL modern day vehicles use the normal configuration to cater for I assume; normal people...

I assumed some of the guys on this forum may have owned one as their first Car... :roflmao: lol

BTW: I worked restoring, hotrodding and customising OLD Cars as a living, so for me many strange things that were fitted to many older makes and model Cars are not that unusual when comparing to modern machinery... (It is the NEW fan-dangled stuff that confuses me nowadays!)

Yet in Hong Kong, while you take the left escalator, the left half is the walking (passing) half and the right half is the standing half.

Reading 'Roman's' comment at the top, he talks about Wagoners and Carriage Drivers and 'Riding Shotgun' as to why some chose which side to drive on, that confused me as it seems in LHD countried the guy holding the Shotgun sat on the right, and he asked a very good question regards why Japan drive in the left lane when their real first contact with the West was via America, I have often pondered that one myself... :o o:
