Well happy days are back again. I will be back home during Chinese New year taking a break from work. I'll be in Cebu and I have to check on my house in Mindanao and I really hope I can make it to Dumaguete see the Boy's..

I have a question for everyone about foreigners living in and around Dumaguetes subdivisions or out by themselves who travel back and forth to there home land for periods of time 4 to 6 months. Do you hear of much breaking in places? I know this happens everywhere that's life, but how much around Dumaguete does foreigners get hit. I have a gated and pretty much secured area. As we all know locks just keeps honest people honest. The crooks will find a way no matter what security you may have. Has any foreigners here or ones you know not on this forum ever had a problem of this kind?

    Foreigners home security

Teacher, what made me bring this subject up. You had said you needed to go check out your home after being gone for awhile. We just bought a place alittle ways out 10 min's or so from Dumaguete and it just made us wonder about break in's. We have never had a problem in Bais City, but Dumaguete is a much larger place.

MaryAnn that is something you have to prepare yourself for as a very real possibility. Although we do not have or own property in Dumaguete yet, as I described in one of my post to the safety of foreigners topic, my sister in laws house, a simple local design and structure, was broken into last year while we were visiting them. Her home is off of the main street and was surrounded by a 6-7 foot wall, which confirms that walls and locks only keep out the honest. It also confirms that we were being watched because they knew everyone in the home was gone. We also thought that because some trees were very close to the wall after this break-in we cut any trees that were too close to the wall and extended the wall to about 12 feet high, and added broken glass to the top of the wall.

These are some of the precautions you may want to consider to make your home more secure but if you are not going to be there, with all the out-of-towners now attracted to Dumaguete because it has become so popular, break-ins and theft is a reality around Dumaguete.

Not that I put much faith in them, anyone on this forum know if electronic security monitoring of homes is available or being used in Dumaguete?

While this is not really good news it is better to go in with your eyes wide open then blissfully shut. Dumaguete is experiencing all the the things that accompany a growing city anywhere in the world.

Thank you for your input. It's always nice to post something that we are concerned about and able to get feed back on it. This is a new area for the two us to live in. So far it has been good responces. We have Barb Wire above the spiked railing and solid gates with steel decorated bars on the window. Hopefully it we help if we leave for a long period of time. So far in Bais City we have no problem. Just remodeled that house made the walls higher and steel spike railing all around the top. Again thanks for your input.

    Foreigner security

Mary Ann, here's my question for you. Why on God's green earth would anyone want to live in a place where they feel compelled to surround themselves with prison walls topped with ugly broken glass and razor wire,
steel bars on every window, inpenetratable steel gates, and still be afraid
to leave the house? Why would anyone in their right mind subject themselves to living like that?

    Caretaker

MaryAnn I never had a break in to date but I have a caretaker that stay’s at my house while I am here in Taiwan. But even when I am home my house is never without at least one person there. The most economical security, always have someone in the house. You should never have a problem.

Too bad Teacher, I can tell you were really looking forward to getting away for awhile, better luck next time.

Are you teaching at a "public" school or one that specializes in teaching English? Are the class schedules there in sync with the PI or are they more like western schools?

You must not know much about the Philippines or you wouldn't ask such a question. ( It's the filipino way ) :-)
