I went by the Black Pearl Bar two days ago and noticed that there was a chain with a lock on the gate! I was told that the owner of the property had evicted the owner/manager of the bar. Yesterday I was told that another foreigner had taken out a new lease with the owner of the property! There are all kinds of rumors flying around. Should make for a good discussion here.

It would not be the first time. I remember the owner of Captain Ribbers getting a good chuckle when he described to me how the originators of the restaurant had leased the property, set it all up, then got evicted by the owners who took it over and ran it quite profitable.

    Leaser beware. This is Philippines.

The Black Pearl is a frequent contributor to the controversy market, but was even more so in its past life when it was known as Coyotes.

    Before it was Black pearl

Some of the old timers will remember that before it was Black Pearl and Coyotes it was "Devlins" ..... The owner of Devlins will attest to having the same gates locked and all his possessions stacked on the highway. As the property owner ripped up his lease.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Who in their right mind walks into a resto-bar here and thinks "this place has such great potential, I'm going to try taking it over!"

Especially considering this is a resto-bar run by people with a loyal following in a tight community of expats. A hostile take-over, screwing the current occupants could result in a substantial group of people never considering going there. Even worse would be that a lot of those people would be natural customers because they go by the Pearl on their way home and back. Personally, I would never go there. My hangout would be next door at Garcia's and down the road at Taco Tayo's. Or go further out and hit La Fiesta. Lots of great choices in that area now.

Though it would be a bit sad to see that place turn into something else. I have a lot of great memories there. I feel like that was the neighborhood where I "grew up" along with Happy Fred's (later turned Pirate Bay) as an expat here. A lot of crazy nights that wouldn't be wise to duplicate.

But, nothing lasts forever. Maybe the place gets taken over by good people who change my mind.

Or maybe none of the sort happens. I guess we'll find out.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. If you want a good glimpse of the future, look at history.

This place has always had these kinds of problems, since it first started out as a bar called "Pissheads".

I agree with most of this post, but the fact is .... the eviction was not totally orchestrated by the owner! Like I say it seems like it was a hostile takeover and another foreigner has moved in! The past owner was sent walking with absolutely no compensation.

Ahhhh, PISSHEADS BAR; Aussie Alan and his cousin (I forget his name) ran a small 4 stool bar before the large rotunda bar was built. A nice little place for a cold bottle of p*ss.

When it was Devlins, the operator says he was escorted out at gun point, Then Miss J, the ex man. I haven't been there for a long time, but have to admit, i like the surroundings.
