Koo-koo koo-koo! You simply dont listen and will never learn. Only 1.5 years here in the PI. enough said.

I am not going to play your mindless games. You need to digest what you read.

Go play your sophomoric and passive aggressive games with someone else.

    Is it really safe?

one percent of US population in jail? OK, I buy that.

But I wonder what percentage of Philippine population belongs in jail but are not...

sorry i have learned so much from an old hand such as your self, it is much more dangerous than the usa, sorry for every doubting your wisdom.

thank for all the info u provided, i learned alot, cops do drive by shootings, i will trust no one, i will watch my @ss at all times, i will treat my family with skepticism, everybody is out to get me - thanks for that.

yes u are right out of the hundred or so people i know around town, all have been robbed in the 18 months, they are all are grateful that they locked themselves away, or they would have been robbed 5 times

live in fear - your choice. tell me how it works out for u, spread that fear to other under the veil of information, sensationalise it, the rusult justifies the means right

if u get offended by forums - that is your problem, nobody listens anyway - it is not important.

Mmmm. this discussion has taken some weird twist.

I live in Amsterdam City Center some see it as Sodom and Gamora and I feel perfectly safe, any drug addicts hanging around in my street I just send away. Seen about 2 (real) robberies in front of my door live (not including drug related hassle) and been held at gun point once and had somebody wave a gun at me as well, it rather makes me angry than scared.

It is not something that I ignore nor let it rule my live, but you got to be aware what type of crime and criminals happen in the area you live in.

Sad but true an eldery foreigner is basicaly everywhere game, there are a lot of tricks to limit the danger to yourself though, not being afraid and have an attitude you know the place and can take care of yourself is important to avoid looking like a victim and so be relative safe of petty crime. Avoid situations as well, don't go around at dark in areas that you don't know and are not crowded.

Crime/Safety in the Fillipines differs per region as well any rich Fillipino will tell you it is one of his first concerns (poor have little choice they tend to stick to where their family is).

Burgalry seems pretty common (not for nothing all windows are barred) and relatives I know don't like to leave their house unattended. Most first hand information I have is crimes against Fillipino's but it are in other parts of the country. There are relatively many guns so hold ups seem pretty common as well (not for nothing there are security guards with shotguns everywhere).

I guess the tips to limit the risks are universal though.

PS. Siquijor Island seems very safe, if you don't have kids and like peace and quiet I would consider it.

Tubigboy, that's exactly what has happened about 2 years ago.
Since then I have been out many times at night to see what's going on when our dogs started to bark abnormally.
I have never faced so far a real problem, but I'm not that stupid to conclude that hence it is a very safe place.
The workers here also have fear for gosts and kwakkwak sounds.
I'm not joking ! So I have to fear that as well ?
What I mean to say with this is, that a lot of fear is not based on FACTS !
If you advice ME to get my request for statistical evidence from the mayor and police etc..., and you don't have searched for it yourself yet, then it's better not to make those statements imho.
I rather prefer to base my actions/decisions on hard evidences.
Untill then ......I stay vigilant....even when I go outside in the night  .
I have taken my measures without needing to elaborate those here.

I do appreciate your concerns and willingness to warn people.
Add please some underligning figures to show the need to be more cautious here than wherever in the world.
Don't ask the others to look for these figures, please

    Never felt worried

Timn8ter I lived there for five years, half the time in Cebu and the other half in Mindanao. Nothing more than petty theft but nothing like what we face daily in America. Remember the hillbilly days something like that in the Philippines when it comes to weapons being used.

Here is my two cents worth. Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so you could say, is fear.

During the last 8 years I have lived and traveled extensively in Asia. Last year I rode a bicycle alone from Chengdu, south west China, through Loas down to Bangkok. Some people said it was TOO dangerous and I was irresponsible.

During my time in Asia and Australia for that matter, I am cautious and careful , but that does not stop me doing what I want to do.

While useful advice regarding some dangers is welcome, we all have a different view of life through our experiences. The Philippines in the short time I have been there, does not seem any more or less dangerous than other Asian countries, (including Australia), to me.

have a nice day, and remember to smile, something I find very easy to do in the Philippines.

Jelly, I did not mention fear at anytime. I just was suggesting that everyone be aware of their surroundings and environment. If I suggested to you that you should not play in the street would this mean that I feared the street? No! Of course not!
By the way, I did look up the Stat's on crime in the PI and Dumaguete. Quite alarming to say the least.

You do it again Tubigboy .
Why not giving us these "quite alarming crime statistics" ?
Or at least tell us where you did find the PI and Dumaguete crime statistics so we can check it out our selves as well.
