Regarding ambulances, I had a serious stroke 2+ years ago. My father-in-law quickly took his bike to the Bacong fire station where the ambulance might be. The ambulance followed him up to our house. I expected a couple guys with a stretcher to come in and load me onto the vehicle an hook me up to an IV, monitor my vitals, and speed me off to Silliman with sirens blazing before I croaked. So the ambulance arrives, one wimpy gets out and tells them to load me in. So my father-in-law, mother-in-law, wife, and a little help from the wimp load me in. No other person there to help or monitor my signs, hook me up to an IV, and no siren. Fortunately, it was Sunday and not a lot of traffic or they could have just dropped me off at St. Peters mortuary in Bacong on the way.
Moral of the story - get your last will and testament written and notarised, just in case....

I recently spent a lot of time at the hospital and in the ICU with a sick friend. I won't take that bet. The hospital and the ICU is full of motorcycle (and other vehicle) accident victims. I found it interesting that the ones most seriously injured were the ones who were minding their own business and got hit by some other imbecile.-

And most of those deaths involve expats driving like they would back home (and being inexperienced with driving in the Philippines) or driving drunk and they use the same amount of protective as most of the locals wear. There certainly are risks with riding a motorcycle but you can lower your chances of serious injury or death with a bit of "common" sense....which seems to be not all that common.

Take it from the man with first hand experience posted above.
I have posted elsewhere that in the Philippines what is called an ambulance is a van with lights.
In the immortal words of Richard Pryor, "Call me a cab! I will be damned if I will bleed to death waiting on an ambulance!" Unfortunately cabs are few and far between around Dumaguete area but the point is still valid. You need to get to treatment as soon as possible. Waiting on the van to come get you probably doubles the time it will take to get effective treatment as you will not receive any en-route.-

I don't have to imagine, the wreckage is on the streets, the ambulances seem to be in constant motion and involved in collisions themselves. There was a guy with a scooter in Sibulan with training wheels because he lost his legs. Another guy in Dumaguete with a pedal tricycle that he powered with his right arm (don't arm wrestle that guy) and although I don't know these people lost legs to road accidents, I'd be willing to bet they did. You also occasionally see people with pretty extensive road rash scars. No, it doesn't require imagination at all.

Yes and riding the wrong type of Bike, many have never ridden bikes before and think they can do anything, this was my way of being just that bit safer, 68 soon and been riding a bike for some 52 years, know your limits and machine and we fair far better.

They sell a 650cc scooter in Dumaguete. There is a dealership just south of Jollibee North. I think it is around the same price. Korean brand?
Honda Waves have a foot brake that is much stronger than the hand brake.
I don't need a cell phone or cigarette in my hand to utilize the "over-run lane". With such crappy infrastructure here you have to use what's available to you.

It's catch as catch can. A couple of years ago a guy was looking for a scooter and I suggested the Kymco Agility City which I had seen but when he went to look they only had the base level Agility so he bought a Super 8. The Agility City is a classier scooter and actually priced about 15K less. Kymco didn't list the Agility City anywhere in the Philippines at that time, may not even now. Detective work and blind chance are what you have to go on.
