Might as well treat yourself Jack, I don't think anyone else is going to buy it for you. You worked hard for it, you earned and saved for it, I'd say it was time for a command decision.
Yes, until they meet their maker, attempt to "overtake" a Ceres bus, or crash into an expat. Come one these things are death traps we hear about at least one fatality a month involving an expat, can you imagine the real body count for locals ? I shudder to think.
Yes and riding the wrong type of Bike, many have never ridden bikes before and think they can do anything, this was my way of being just that bit safer, 68 soon and been riding a bike for some 52 years, know your limits and machine and we fair far better. JMHO
I don't have to imagine, the wreckage is on the streets, the ambulances seem to be in constant motion and involved in collisions themselves. There was a guy with a scooter in Sibulan with training wheels because he lost his legs. Another guy in Dumaguete with a pedal tricycle that he powered with his right arm (don't arm wrestle that guy) and although I don't know these people lost legs to road accidents, I'd be willing to bet they did. You also occasionally see people with pretty extensive road rash scars. No, it doesn't require imagination at all.
I wonder what the statistics are on how many people lose their lives each year in Duma from riding a bike? I will bet the hospitals are pretty full on the weekends too. That would be a good project for students to do.
And most of those deaths involve expats driving like they would back home (and being inexperienced with driving in the Philippines) or driving drunk and they use the same amount of protective as most of the locals wear. There certainly are risks with riding a motorcycle but you can lower your chances of serious injury or death with a bit of "common" sense....which seems to be not all that common.
I recently spent a lot of time at the hospital and in the ICU with a sick friend. I won't take that bet. The hospital and the ICU is full of motorcycle (and other vehicle) accident victims. I found it interesting that the ones most seriously injured were the ones who were minding their own business and got hit by some other imbecile.
