STD's rising in Dumaguete


SEX-related diseases are increasing in Dumaguete City, the capital of Negros Oriental province.

Dr. Fe Sycip Wale, head of the Silliman University Extension Program (SUEP) in a media conference Wednesday afternoon initiated by the local office of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), said that for a period of only five months this year (January to May), 100 cases of sexually transmitted infections have been recorded.


Sexually transmitted infections may in some cases lead to full blown HIV/AIDS cases in several years if not properly attended to.

About 166 cases have been recorded in 2005 and 198 for 2006 for the same first five month period.

Dr. Wale said that for this reason, Silliman University, in coordination with several barangay health workers have intensified its drive on HIV/AIDS prevention.

Target of the prevention is centered on the 60 percent of the most at risk group, the youth.

Six pilot barangays are empowered to protect themselves from sexually transmitted infections, HIV and AIDS and risk factors for HIV infections by the year 2009.

They also hope that 60 perecent of people in prostitution in Dumaguete City will be protected.

Six pilot barangays of the prevention program are Tinago, Bajumpandan, Barangay 8, Cadawinonan, Calindagan, and Barangay Looc.

A youth peer education has already been conducted in these barangays. About 112 youths have benefited so far from the program.

Dr. Wale hopes that the advocacy and social motivation projects will be integrated in the local development plans of each municipality, city in the province.

They are hoping that by 2009, the program would have gain support.

It's not surprising, for all the reasons mentioned in other posts, with the influx of foreign visitors and prostitutes from other provinces visiting, thanks to the U.S. Navy

What is not clear from the cut and pasted info,(third line) as far as I know the only way to contact HIV is through direct physical contact with an infected person, not by contracting some other unspecified STD and having it blossom into HIV. I think the doctor needs to do some homework. Or perhaps he was misquoted, or quoted out of context.
