"Pedicab" properly refers to a pedal cab, powered by a bicycle. There's no need to adopt incorrect Taglish.
I think everyone here in this thread knows what a "pedicab" is. And it's NOT about "adapting" the MISNOMER (not "incorrect Taglish" first, yes it's wrong but it's not Taglish). Do you know why it's called PEDICAB? It's not because Dumagueteños didn't know how to properly name their mode of tranportation. Nope, if you look back in the old times where Dumaguete was still on its first stage as a thriving community/town, their mode of transportation were kalesa(s) (horse-driven carriages), and then the town evolved and became much busier and has more demands, and pedicabs came. The LITERAL ONES. These are just cabs attached to bicycles where they push and pedal. (Dumaguete is just a flatland so pedicabs are used just like in any flatland towns like Ozamiz City, they still use pedicabs). And then of course, the town was growing and demands were also growing and cabs also "evolved". Cabs attached to engine-powered motors came and replaced the cabs attached to the bicycles. BUT the name/term for the mode of transportation wasn't changed (or was not succesfully changed from "pedicab" to "tricycle") because Dumagueteños were so accustomed to calling them "pedicabs", until the name really stuck until today. (it's just like how you address your sibling or parents for example. If you grow up calling your sister "ate", you will always call her "ate", but if you try to call her by her name, it would be very awkward to you because you're much more accustomed to calling her "ate" ) That's basically how and why Dumaguete call "tricycles" as PEDICABS, it's because of the history and of the "evolution" of their medium of transportation, NOT because they do not know that pedicabs are "pedal cabs". LOL It's a University Town, a town where hundreds and hundreds of intellectuals live. LOL :D
Thank you, Jopliniac, for the detailed explanation. However, the fact remains that there is a word, pedicab, for the category, but not for the individual members. And this is typical for Taglish, as well as for others of the Western Malayo-Polynesian languages. Because there is no English word to adopt, and filipino languages (and, by extension, conceptual thought) are relatively unadaptable. Compare India. The human-pulled "rickshaw" (from Japanese by way of Kipling) has given way to the cycle rickshaw and the auto rickshaw. No lack of clarify there. The national language of India, as well as many regional languages, have a long history of literacy, a broad vocabulary that rivals Russian and English, and the means to form new words out of old ones. I've heard filipino English-speakers attempt to adapt by saying, "I'll take a cab", referring to a motorized 3-wheeler.
Tricycle fare is depend on how you look like,if your white be very careful they will charged double or triple or quadruple, but when your brown which mean from here, no question normal fare. Because when they start to ask i already say no, and look for another one. But when your with a filipino together with the white, its risky, sometimes they charged more or ask first or sometimes they wont ask and charged normal because the local knew the normal price. Advantage of being white, tricycle comes to you even you dont call them, and on our part, as local, sometimes we have to wait long time before tricycle stopped. As experienced, everytime i am with my friend, white, in one sec tricycle is there but when im alone, even your full of things in your hand, no one sometimes come.. It takes long time like thirty minutes..??!! So in the end walking is the best idea..hehe kidding aside! No , just be clever too of choosing tricycle...
In England, we say, when waiting for a long time and none come. Then three come along at once. Not trike's but bus's.
Digo, Yeah, that would be one experience. But for me, that's somehow true, but what's more true at least for me, is that, when i just walk, yeah like obviously and basically just walking, trike drivers would pass by and ask me where i am heading to! LOL And not one would do that, nor two, not even three, BUT almost every trike drivers who passed by me! Sometimes it pisses me off, because when i am in dire need of a lift, no motor would come up, but if i just walk and really have no intention or not even giving any sign of getting a motor, then trike drivers would come. tsk. I know i am not alone in this kind of situation! :D
HEY Ric. That is great news, this is the town for me, I picked right, first up - I am soooooooooooooo - Intellectual myself, ha ha ha ha ha ha:D:D:D:p:p:p Paul.
Jopliniac, Thats really true too. When you need them, for sure they dont come and when you dont need them, oh lots are coming..sometimes, its so stupid! No looking and no thinking..But not all are like that but 95% are like that.. Im Filipino, but its true..
