Does anyone have any more updates on Robinsons Mall in Dumaguete? Or perhaps SM Mall? What other shops, restaurants, hotels, etc have opened since January 2007? I'd be glad for any information, as I've finally made my firm decision to come home for vacation this August! No evil boss is going to change my mind!!!

Just drove by the Robinsons Mall site,, got a fence around it, doesnt look like any building has started. I've only been here a few days but i'm pretty sure thats the site judging from the signs. I'd say it should be finished about 2009 if they start soon.

Sometimes it helps to remind them they don't seem to have a problem taking a month off.

They are still curing the foundations that they have built before building the superstructure. As what I have heard the mall here will be one of the largest in this area (maybe even bigger in size than Robinsons Bacolod) and it will have a hotel. An insider of Robinsons told me they will open April next year. Workers of Monolith Construction, the usual contractor of SM and Robinsons malls, are now detailed at the construction area...They should start construction soon.

Plenty of shops are opening around. In a few weeks, National Bookstore will be opening.

That's great! Where's the location for National Bookstore going to be? I always dreamed of them opening a branch in Dumaguete. Not enough bookstores there.

How can NB open if the mall opens around April 2008, or do I misunderstand and NB has nothing to do with Robinsons' Mall?

I heard that both Robinsons and Silliman are having a "tug-of-war" regarding NBS, but I think they will open in both commercial areas.

    Robinsons curing mall foundations

The Negros Chronicle, May 27, 2007

No, they are not stopping the Robinson mall construction. Management claims that it is temporarily halted because the foundations, constituting phase 1 of the whole project, are being cured below ground and is done by a German company.

Reason: Being near the shoreline the mall site ground is soft. As such it needs extra time for the foundation casts to season or harden enough to withstand the rigors of time.

In fact, Alex Sy, President of Negros Oriental Chinese Chamber of Commerce, said that the foundations are 35-40 meters deep and cost millions of pesos with the curing age lasting for about a month.

After that, another contractor, this time a Filipino owned company, one of the biggest in the country, will begin constructing phase 2.
Finally, there are considerable adjustments being made including the mall?s design because it will be a three-storey structure now with the third floor being planned as a hotel.

For his part, Dumaguete City Administrator Dominador Dumalag Jr. while strongly denying speculations that the construction of a Robinsons mall in Barangay Calindagan is going to be aborted, offered a slightly different reason. He claims that the construction will only be delayed because the heavy equipments being used at the Calindagan site are being shipped to Pampanga where another mall is being hurriedly built.

The city's Robinsons mall is originally set to be completed by October or November this year but this might be moved to the first quarter of 2008 due to this development. But, Sy insisted that it would be impossible for the owners and contractors to change the schedule because the management must begin operations as soon as possible to pay for the loans acquired for its construction.
