Sorry ellAngela that I didnt reply earlier. I was away for a few days (visiting Legaspi). I don't remember the exact costs but we ended up taking Montegro Lines on each leg of the trip and their prices are shown on their website. Im pretty sure the other ferries are about the same. Car prices are based on length.

If you are only interested in time and price I would go the Batangas-Mindoro-Iloilo-Bacolod route but I highly suggest getting the ferry schedules for each island before going and like someone mentioned, if it is harvest time expect it to take a very long time to catch a ferry and then when driving you will be all over the road avoiding the crap falling out of the trucks. Much less driving but more ferry time (I'm not sure which is more dangerous in this country). Driving through the Bicol, Samar,Leyte and Cebu is a scenic ride and will take longer. I really enjoy driving and seeing the mountains and volcanoes (i still have hopes of seeing one explode, in the distance of course).

I believe the ports going through the Mindoro route are going to be easier to deal with as well. Matnog and the one at the bottom of Cebu are easy but Ormoc is a major headache, especially if dealing with 2Go Shipping. The last time I used 2go shipping the office that you pay at to take a car is not even close to the port, good luck finding it and that seems to be the most corrupt and greedy city I have been in the Philippines. (BTW, the fixers in Matnog are extremely annoying and pushy and will follow you even if you say no and expect to get paid when you get the ticket. They also let beggars on the actual port while you wait to load the boat but just throw a 5 peso coin, boiled egg or whatever else you could throw a long distance in the water and they disappear.)

Thanks Steve for this very good information. Roughly, how much did you spend for that?

    Cheers,

I really don't remember the total cost but you can get a pretty good estimate on the Montenegro Shipping Lines website: Montenegro Shipping Lines Official Website - Home . When I crossed from Roxas to Dumangas, there was a lot of bus traffic going to Boracay that caused delays and as Wrye83 stated, the sugar cane trucks can cause some major headaches, especially on the Dumangas (Ilo Ilo) to Bacolod route if you happen to cross during harvest. On the other hand, I just spoke with 2Go again this week because I am planning to go to Leyte. The crossing from Ormoc to Cebu alone was estimated at Php10,000 for a small car. If you want the easy route, putting your car on Superferry from Manila to Dumaguete is the probably way to go. A small car is Php15,000 (rate from the rate calculator on their website) and if you want to splurge a bit, get a cabin for 2. The cabins are nice and it makes the trip like a small cruise weaving through the Islands (as long as they dont hit one!). I have done that trip once and would like to do it again. I would have actually taken the ferry from Manila directly to Dumaguete but the departure dates didnt line up with my travelling schedule and I dont mind the adventure anyway. Good luck.

    Bringing my dogs along!

Excellent thread and very handy for me,
i will be needing to do this trip soon from angeles city to dumaguete, i need to bring my 2 large dogs with me on the trip, so obviously i cannot leave the car on a 24h ferry, does anyone know if i can leave them in the car when taking the ferries? i thinking shortest possible ferry trips an more on land so i can stop and feed them toilet etc.
has any one seen pets or ever taken their pets? mine are not really friendly and need to be kept away from people , i have not had them mix with strangers,
    any advice well received
    thanks

I can't see it being a problem, leaving your dogs in the car. Generally, the Philippines is not very strict on these things. Many people even bring their fighting cocks on the ferries and leave them lying around in boxes, pretty well anywhere on the boat! It's kind of funny, waking up to a rooster crowing when you are a couple miles out at sea! On the ferry from Roxas to Caticlan, the longest ferry ride of the trip (about 3.5 hours), we stayed in the car for the entire voyage because there were no seats available on the boat (the people that had embarked before us on the busses were sprawled out sleeping and would not make room for others). If you are concerned though, you can contact Montenegro Lines in Batangas at (63) (43) 723-8989.
