Most of the time it is the filipina who wants to have a baby, married or not. I agree adoption is not part of the culture here. If a foreigner is willing to give his wife or gf a baby, there is an explicit agreement to support the child. Moreover, the joy a guy has with his child is inexplainable. A total unselfish commitment by the guy. I guess one has to experience it rather than criticising it. Just my opinion.

A close friend and I discussed this topic at lunch today. He made the point that when I pass away my wife will have a son to eventually take care of her and the boy will have his college tuition from his social security. Their house is paid for so they will have an ongoing comfortable life. I wonder if those without a child provide the same type of security to their significant other?

I flew back to the states for this and SOB it was much much much worse then the original vas... The cost in the states ranges from 4500 to 15,000 depending on if they knock you out or just numb you up. Moreover, there is such a huge difference in experience that I found. I ended up flying to Austin Tx and having the procedure performed and was told to have my count checked after six months. I did and they were there but still not have a bun in the oven as of yet. And I totally agree that I can't ever say I could see my wife adopting a child, now matter how I present the argument unless it was a family members child in need this would never be allowed. Good luck.

Like you may have been, I was startled seeing an "old Fat" in Robinson's mall walking a stroller when I arrived here. I thought the man was using the stroller more as a walker for himself than he was to carry his child. I too thought there was a little machismo, proof of virility and all the other prideful thought that must have gone through the old farts mind.
Then I became more informed, at least to the Filipino Culture and American Social Security system.
There are a few reasons for having a child if you are an old fart from the US. The first it that most ladies, not just Filipinas really have a mothering instinct, and want to act as mother. To me it would be selfish to take the best years out of a lady's life and not to give a lady that experience giving birth to a child if that is what she desires.(Selfish - I want to feel good about being with a young child bearing age lady not like a scammer who just ripped off her good years and abandoned her through natural causes)
Secondly, although I have great relationship with my kids older kids, I am now retired and could give much more time and receive much more satisfaction from being able to devote more of my time to a young child. (selfish - I want to be close to my child)
Thirdly, if you are from the US, you receive through SS, 1/2 you monthly SS payment for your first child for the first 18 years of their life. In my case that comes out to over 9 million peso without any additional moneys earned from investments over the years. I would think that a child could probably own about 6 income properties by the time their are 18 yo (remember they will be dual citizenship and can own property). So it provides for a good income for my wife even if I am not here, as well as a great nest egg for a child's education housing etc. If after 18 years my wife has not figured out how to save/invest the money properly I married the wrong woman.... (selfish - I want to care for my wife and child... not abandoned them when she is 3 months pregnant like so many single moms and their children)
Fourthly it is fun to make babies.... oh yeah...
I do agree that if you can not go this route with the US SS system then adaption may be just as satisfying if there are issue with birthing a child.-
