I don't go through much drinking water, so a month supply would cost me under $10. If I were in a situation where my back-up water supply got taken out by my house falling apart and I could be looking at months with no clean water, then it would be time to start packing.
Not trying to argue for arguments sake. I have been without water here before, so this is an important issue. We live in an area where natural disasters can happen. It's also good to know what issues your local water supply might run into. For example, Judyville is a large compact development which runs its own water utility. Their well has gone out in the past and everyone in Judyville went without water.
Which brings up another possible issue, you can't get water at all (as opposed to getting water, but your supply is contaminated.) What would you do in that case? Maybe you have easy access to a well? Maybe you can go to the river? When Judyville lost their water, they made a service available to fill any jugs you had.
I suppose it's best to have multiple back-ups. Carry X weeks supply of drinking water. Stock purifying tablets. Store extra water containers. Know the source of your water supply. Know where you might get water as a back-up if the supply got cut off.-
