I just replaced our forever leaking "Best Tank" with a new composite fiber one.
I thought I would make a nice Bbq out of the old ss tank. Cut it lenghwise, hinge the top, line the bottom with firebrick and install an old oven gas burner and control, add a few air vents, and some lava rock..... any help/thoughts/suggestions ????? Miguel

Hi Miguel, that sounds like a good idea to me, the Fire/Clay Bricks you can get at "Clay Town" Daro, strange enough I have been Treeking up all the Hills in Dumaguete but I have yet to see Lava stones, maybe you could find some at City Hardware. The welding you can have done at a local Welding Shop, make the Grill out of Stainless steel, you can get that at "Zenith Marketing" just of the Puplic Market on the left side and use Stainless Hinges for the Lid, you can get them at "Top's and Bottoms" Regards:smile:

It's not something I would try because the skin of the tank is so thin. Once you cut it, it will probably flop all over the place. Would you be interested in selling the tank - leaks and all?

If he puts a perimeter frame of light angle iron around the cut opening, top and bottom halves, it should be fine.

Miguel, is it a Pressure Tank or Storage, in my experience, the Pressure Tanks are heavier Gauge, the suggestion from "Knowdafish" would be good to follow, it sure would make it stronger.

    Thanks smind.
george...probably will go ahead with the bbq...What do you want the old tank for??/
    knf..that was my plan
-its a pressure tank,so not so thin and with the fire brick linning, should be ok.
A better/perfect one would be a nice SS San Miguel beer keg !!!!!

    old best tank

The tank should be strong enough with out welding extra braces, but you might either bolt or weld a peice about 2 inches wide around the outside of the top half so it will mate to the bottom half when you close the lid. That will also keep it from warping if it gets to hot. Put a grate 2-3 inches of the bottom so the ash can fall through also it will let air get to your charcoal or wood.

Also install your hinges BEFORE YOU CUT IT IN HALF or it will warp and be a real night mare to fix.

It all depends on how and what you are going to do with it, wood, charcoal, gas, elect, so on.

Need any other info send me a privet message.

I am a BBQ and smoker addict
