What with the pollution, expenses, horrible traffic and now the arrest of an innocent man for the rape/murder of a little girl, our group of 6 foreigners has grown to over a dozen.
We all intend to settle in Negros Oriental before the end of the year.
Lou, a friend of mine is going in 2 weeks and he will basically be our scout.
In June a few more will be there and who knows how many more will follow after that.
I have some personal business to take care of here before I can go (selling a property and deciding what and whom will come with me), so my move will have to wait until the first of November.
We are all excited and can hardly wait to move to the area, personally, I will be building a home north of the city as I am happier in rural, hilly terrain, but I suspect the rest are city boys and will settle in Dumaguete proper.
I am combing the internet, talking to others who are or have been to Negros Oriental and answering a lot of ads on properties for sale in order to make our transition less stressful.

BW, fyi, there is an American who built a house in the hills in Amlan not far from the hiway. No sea view but a nice size lot and huge one story well-built house. I heard a rumor he may want to sell. If interested, pm me and I will contact my builder who did his tile roof.

the wave goes also the other direction, many moving away, specially if not 60+ or/and living on very small income leaving them no choice.
also those came from philippine cities where you can actually get things done without running after it for weeks just to find out they need to go to a real city, thinking usually in 1-2 years moving away again and many do it.
When retired and nothing else to do, hunting for really basic things (like water or proper electricity or basic internet) might be a great recreational activity, if not retired it is pretty annoying.
Not that I talk about anybody, but one of our members gets through all of that right now and shares it with us. Those are the posts I would definitely pay a lot attention to as the reality is not as funny as reading them or coming here for a short 2 month trip or even only weeks/days. no matter how often it is still just a short vacation kinda thingy.

    Exodus!

:D Someone said not long ago, about taking the girl out of the village but can't take the village out of the girl, In a sense I can agree with Rhoody, that city Dwellers seem a little lost in the Smaller Cities/Towns where the infrastructure is slower to develop. We have over the last year had a few, well more than a few, that Knock Dgte and it's sometimes inadequacies., As Rhoody pointed out, if the retired element did not have these little things to follow up and pursue, what would they do all day :D I will fully retire in 2+years and already, I find plenty to do chasing my tale when I am at home. To those who think the grass is greener on this side, FF will remind you, as he does me, The Rose coloured Glasses will have to come off. I appreciate the desire to leave the Pollution, Traffic, Costs. Like our traffic too, if it is not at a standstill, it moves slowly, a little like the administration here. I hope you all bear this in Mind when you make your decision, good luck to you all.

We are all retired and just want to enjoy the Boardwalk, Why Not and the soon to be two malls.
Mainly we won't mind chasing after items, but mostly we just want to relax and not care about much of anything in a clean place with a view of a clean ocean for a change.

Go away. We don't want any more grumpy expats chasing girls from McDo's to Time Out, cussing the "quaint" driving habits of the locals, drinking all the SanMig, driving up the prices of real estate, bitching about an occasional brown out or water stoppage, ruining their vehicles on our pot holed roads, picking up the dead motorcyclists on an almost daily basis, and so on. Just leave us alone to enjoy all these little pleasantries by ourselves.

I am a good example of what Rhoody is referring to. I spend 13 mos always running around to get things done (lot, marriage, house, passport, utilities working, etc) and time flew by. Now all of that is done there is not much to do except watch my wife's dummy grow with our child. It was suggested to me early on by JackP to have patience (I wasn't blessed with any) when trying to get action items accomplished. We have room for a garden but I am not a gardener, the wife is. There is a decent beach 1k away but often the dudes hanging out there are more bored than I am and that is dangerous. I have found Dgte is an inexpensive place to retire with great weather (at least to me) just not much to do. The restaurant choices are good enough and that helps and I discovered Mamia's coffee shop is open early and has wifi. Once in a while we will see a movie at the mall. We play tongit, and watch limited tv and dial up internet. Need more of that patience Jack was talking about. My body is too beaten up to go diving frequently. My bottom line, Dgte is not for everybody. My advice is you need to have project(s) to work on to keep busy. I play Sudoku to keep my brain balanced and go to the gym to keep from falling completely apart. Another member said he is leaving to go back to California, he said financially that is not a problem for him. Lucky guy! But I still like it here in spite of the boredom challenge.
