Maybe your landlord knows something about the place that you don't? Maybe it has poor, or substandard wiring? Maybe she doesn't want to see her investment go up in smoke? Maybe? Most household fires in the Philippines are caused by electrical problems. I'm just guessing. The other possibility is that she is a control freak. There are some here who LOVE being able to dictate their whims to foreigners.

Well, welcome to the Philippines. I could take a guess that this will be an ongoing problem.

Good luck on the apartment search.

My guess that the only ongoing problem is going to be with you on these threadas.. You got a quick lip to talk your random thoughts but we'll see if able to back it up. As far as a brain goes I wouldnt count on that.

Hope everything works out for ya. Enjoy the Philippines and be careful here. The laws aren't exactly stacked on the foreigners side, and if they do work out for the foreigner the losing side will use any means possible to get what they deem justice is.

But again, good luck looking for apartments. You might want to look at Valencia for apartments. It's a nice place to live.

The first five years I was always mad...
The next five, I started to ignore that made me upset...
Nowadays, I simply don't bother anymore...
Just use your a/c when you please. Keep windows open or close as you please. When the landlord comes around just say 'Yes, yes' and 'Ok'. But when she left, just don't give a sh*t about what she just said. As long as you follow what she says, she will keep coming back to get her daily 'Ah, I just bothered that foreigner again' dose. When she realise you ignore her, she will feel intimidated and uncomfortable coming back.

It could be 2 things i can see from a filipino point of view, either poor electrical wiring or shes keeping an eye on how you use her stuffs and if she catches you not properly using it then she will stitch you up with your deposit or will ask you crazy amount of money for repairs. Just be cautious. If you are still looking let me know, i can show u one of my places(at the beach) and see if you and your gf might like it.

i dont totally agree to this just remember this if your in philippines "IGNORANCE OF THE LAW IS NOT AN EXCUSE" and that applies to everyone, foreigners andr filipinos. The only problem the police and judges here encounter with the foreigners are most of them instead of admitting their faulth they act and talk like they know it all, and they back up their excuses with "this is not how we do things in our country blah blah blah" what they forgot about is, your in thr philippines, learn to do things thr filipino way and with regards to the laws..google can always come in handy and newspapers :-).

if you like to settle here happily them you must know how to be polite because what ive noticed to foreigners here when they get pulled over on checkpoints they carry on like porkchops and start swearing as a filipino we dont like to be yelled at, if a policeman ask you to show your license itll be easy to instead open your mouth just show it to them and if he finds any problems with your bike try being nice still and keep your cool. Its been over 9 months i still havent got a rego in my vehicle and everytime i get pulled over i explained it to them and ask for warnings and they will understand.

if you try to intimidate them, the worse they can get and they can stitch you up like you wouldnt believe and that applies even for a snutty nose filipino not just a foreigner.

You're right there are guys like that but many a foreigner has lost cases in court simply because of connections the local had within the courtroom. I'm sure many of filipino have lost for that very same reason as well. The down side is that even when foreigners have a connection, the connection will be very wary to side with the foreigner because of the way the society thinks here. Filipino mainly believe in sticking up for filipino. There are a few exceptions to this though.

Getting belligerent with police is a bad idea no matter where you are. Only an idiot or self absorbed ahole would do that. I always put on a smile and ask how the officers day was when I'm stopped and use sir/ma'am when speaking to them. I've been let go at a checkpoint when I couldn't produce a valid registration, I believe it was only because I was nice and extremely friendly.

I use this forum to vent about things I don't like about the Philippines. There's a time and place for complaining, a checkpoint isn't that place.
