    Entrance!

 When we discussed which end of the lot to put the entrance, One thing that came up was "Oh BUT, if we have that end, we will have to walk all the the way up the lot, if we come home this way, instead of that way, Can't we have 2 Entrances. The Lot is about 25 meters in length.
OH! Then we can have it in the Middle" Now, I'm Stupid!

They have some of the hillfolk here living in the highlands that could walk the legs off anyone here, I guarantee. Some of the people I've seen up in the mountainous provinces had legs like steel bands from carrying large loads up long steep trails every day.
I've noticed these same type of people eat the fresh food, lots of veggies and only small amounts of meat. And theres lots of old people, well into their 70's+. still in very good health and quite ambulatory even after a life with very little or no modern medical care.

that is a good point...I live in the mountains over on Cebu and yea they walk there...and in bare feet too, there people there i bet never worn flip flops. I bought a piece of property from an old man. He walked to the Barangay office barefooted to sign the papers and it was pointed out to me he had come a long way and if they were impressed with how far he had walked believe me it was a heck of a long walk

My wife walks all the time. My daughter deliberately gets out of a trike a distance from the house just to get some extra exercise. When my wife and I are out together it is my arthritis that determines the duration and speed of our walks.
Many years ago while living in Cebu I was training for triathalons and duathalons almost every day kids would come out on some of the ratyest bikes you have ever seen and challenge me for a mile or two. Sometimes a guy in the full lycra and a real racing bike would pull out. I was in great shape and often lost to them.

That describes my in-laws perfectly! They will walk 3-4 hours while carrying too much stuff in order to catch the bus to come visit us! Father-in-law will do it while carrying 50 plus pounds of rice while mother-in-law is carrying the rest of their stuff. Very impressive! What impressed me the most is when I went to visit them for the 1st time at their place. My father in-law carried a heavy wooden double bed frame for us to sleep on for over a mile even while wading a river with it resting on the top of his head! The banks of that river are extremely steep too! He borrowed it from the local church! With their strength and surefootedness, I think they are part mountain goat! :D

exactly fish, I was going to mention that as well. For as much walking as they do their agility is what's really remarkable as well as their relentless approach to carrying things. On our farm we do not have a road, everything has to be carried in. Cement, gravel, block, lumber, feed, everything comes in on someone's head and on some trails to the farm itself that I can barely get up and down even unburdened. When its raining which is often I find them basically impassible since it all turns to slick clay. But here they come with their baskets strapped to their foreheads. I will be clutching a tree branch trying not to slide down the hill and they go running by..."'scuse 'scuse" lol...How do they do that? How do they get their flip flops to adhere to the slick clay like that? Its like an act of will power. I have a guy that can't be over 80 pounds, I mean he is small even by Filipino standards, all he does is carry things for people. I swear I have seen him with not one but two sacks of cement in his basket go running along. How does he do that?

It's true guys what you say about the older generation still being strong and fit in a lot of cases, My first visit to Iligan Mindanao my wife took me to the small market not far from their place. We bought vegetables and fruit. One old lady was selling jack fruit. I needed two hands to lift the one we purchased. My wife said don't worry the lady will carry it back for us, to my amazement the old lady picked up the jack fruit with one hand placed it on her head and walked the 1000 yards/metres to the house!
However I do beleive that the now generation tend to fall into two types those who keep fit and those who overeat and do little exercise.

when i was in high school, the only time I will ride a trike is in the early morning rush to school or when its raining. Me and my friends who belong to the same barangay would walk in going home (NOHS to Piapi). We also always walk in going to and around the downtown area. That was 15 years ago.

I love to walk around duma, everytime we come home, me and my wife would always find time to walk especially in the afternoon. When its not scorching hot.

and I agree with all your observations regarding our older folks. they are strong. my grandfather is 70plus yo and he still can do some carpentry and heavy lifting. it must be their generations lifestyle and diet.

i think most filipinos would not be opposed to the idea of walking at night or in late afternoon but not in the midday sun for obvious reasons. we often marvel at the sight of caucasians gladly soaking up the sun. maybe filipinos need to experience what it's like to live in colder climes to appreciate the tropics.
