I actually think that Ubuntu/Linux is the best/most user friendly OS. It's quite simple to use. The only problem is the compatibility. I suspect this will change as Asia moves up in the world and their middle class can start to afford computers (but doesn't want to pay an arm and a leg for Apple/Microsoft licensing). The computers they buy are also of lesser quality than what you get in the West, Linux is better to run on these types of computers as they put less strain on hardware and it is easier to find computer manufactures in Asia who are throwing Linux on computers as a default OS.

Unfortunately I could see Microsoft giving out their licensing for free, or an extremely discounted price in the Asia market to get a strong hold on the market and get people trapped with their crap OS. Most will just accept that a computer is slow, since they have no reference point to go from. Hacking and viruses are a problem now....and we don't even have 1/8th of the world population with computer access. The world of computers is going to get a lot more dangerous once you add a large portion of China's/India's almost 3 billion people.

I have tried Linux/Knoppix but for what I do, there is a plethora of Programs available for Windows, and I use at times 3 or 4 different programs to gain an effect I am after. I must admit since 1996 when buying my first PC I have never paid for software. When Windows XP was released you could buy it for I think a quarter of the price in Asia than you could in Australia, it was Microsoft's attempt at stopping Black Market copies flooding the market. I have since bought a legitimate copy of Windows 7 but out of sheer laziness instead of activating it I merely used a patch to activate it offline.

Luckily for me I do nothing that is secretive or sensitive, and after trying all of the top name Antivirus offerings found them to be nothing more than bloated pieces of crap. Using the supplied MS Essentials with a 3rd Party Firewall, then going to sites such as Symantec, TrendMicro, Eset, AVG etc to do the Home Scans never turn anything up anyways after doing a scan using the MS software.

But just for the sheer availability of various programs, MS has it for me.
