    An entertaining essay for you...

Since you are not one of the several here who is illiterate and ignorant, I thought you and some others who can read and write and still have intact cognitive functions might appreciate a link to Mark Twain's essay on the "lowest animal". I found it funny, and informative. The Lowest Animal, by Mark Twain - Classic American Essays

Thank you for the assumption that I am still sane, literate, cultivated, etc. I have read the Book already, like always, Twain is a keen observer of live and the creatures he encounters, of which we are one, the Human being, and yes he gets it right with every comparison...
    Shame on us...

I have no idea why cats and dogs here are so much afraid of people.
We started to feed a cat with a kitten when we came. Homeless. They just came one day and were extremely frightened of us which surprised me badly. Later on seing we have no intention to hurt them the couple felt better and even started to gain weight on chiken bones. But a week ago a kitten dissapeared! One day he simply didn't come and his mom was definetly looking 4 him, but he never whowed up.
To say my wife was upset is to say nothing cos we had no idea what could have happened to sucha small nice creature, he even never went to the road where smg bad could have happened to him.
Than 2 dogs came, scared of ppl too. Also scared of cats which was impressive too)))
All the homeless animals we saw here were depressed, starving and beware of humans.
I hope this is not a trend here on Phils.

That is normal, Filipinos as a group treat animals VERY poorly (some don't but a very large portion do). The ones that treat their animals ok seem to think a one meter square cage is home for a large dog, and that it should never get free from it, or, chained on a one meter long leash so it can only lay down in it's own feces. It is not considered a "pet" or a part of the family, it is considered a possession to show off to their friends, and often will spend it's entire life in the cage or on the chain.

Many of the rest think a dog is food, and the way to make it tender is to put it in a bag and beat it to death with sticks. Think I'm joking? I'm not. If you had seen this happen to your mother, would you not be a bit wary of humans too?

A few treat their animals well, but mostly only those who have been around those silly foreigners.

Few will train an animal, and if asked will insist that a dog cannot be trained not to bark, etc. In their case, this is correct, as in order to train a dog you first must be smarter than the dog.

This area is MUCH better about animal treatment than many others.

This is sad unfortunately these things happen. You'll find that some people that sees a stray dog on the street they're first reaction is to either kick it or throw stones at it. It's very appalling maybe because some of them grew up without pets therefore they just have no respect. They don't know how to care for animals. I have 3 dogs at home ( a Rottweiler, French bulldog, and sh*t shu) all are up to date with vaccinations but if I see anyone that treats animals badly, they can be sure enough they will a serve from me.

Youll find that some people in philippines especially the ones living in the slums eat dogs, cats, snakes, gators, worms, bats and birds. Some of them will even say that the meat of these poor animals is much better than beef or it taste like chicken. My dad once killed a big snake that ate 6 of his chooks in a week then the neighbours asked for the snake so they can make it like their sumsuman (food eaten during drinking sessions). I hope you and your wife are ready to what other crazy things your about to see in philippines.

Snakes and gators (frogs as well) actually taste pretty dang good. I would say it's similar to chicken, a bit more "gamey", but a better texture.

I can't comment on the bats, cats, and dogs, but beer battered snake can be great. Also nothing wrong with some gator meat, and only a total vegetarian would not eat bird. Sometimes bird can even taste like chicken!
