Let’s not chuck too many stones before finding our targets first. Can I add to your list? The erosion of civil liberties in the UK is alarming, if not reflective of a wider global trend.

I can understand your sentiments Cerne, which the present generation have yet to grasp.
That those who feel badly done to, because of the restrictions imposed at present, have to find things to complain about, to vent their frustration.
My own Father ( born in 1901 ) lived through two world wars and the Great Depression, compared to that, I find it hard to justify peoples
behaviour these last 18 months in Britain.
When I hear talk of how badly treated people were in the America's a 100 years ago , I reflect on the lives of ordinary people in Britain living in workhouses or farmworkers treated badly, people living in Tenement blocks with one toilet to the landing's for ten family's,
with no medical care, relying on the kindness of others in time of need.
No we dont want those days back, our forefathers fought for the freedom from tyranny, the fight today is the fight for survival against Pollution, Climate change, World poverty, let's make them history.

 

This is one that I depart from John, mostly...

Being a ‘63 born n bred new arrival, the war had only been over for about 18 years. Now think back to what you might have been doing when ‘99 turned 2000, not that long ago huh? Folk still talked about what they went through, what they lost, how they managed for most of my formative years. I learned lots.

At least I got the impression that the sacrifice, hardship was worth something in the belief that something better could be achieved. I’ve picked that up, and if I turn the clock back a wee bit further I grew up with people that had the guts to stand up to Hitler\Mussolini/Franco before the Uk decided to defend Poland. From our ‘country’ too...could go back to the fruitless pointless fought for the rich ‘Great War’ as well. Lions n Donkeys, Grandfer went through the hell of Passchaendale as a teenager gassed to fek and without the hope of a pension, social security or a job...just for what? So Britannia could rule the waves? So women could be still denied the vote? Sheesh, my blood boils.

Memory is a strong factor here, we ‘Brits’ need to have a long hard look at ourselves and start pointing fingers. None of my lot owned slave ships, coal mines or supplied the biggest set of traitors to support Hitler in the 30s or Russia in the 50’s to 80s. Forgive me for forgetting Colonial atrocities back further.

It’s good to face forward, I agree, but let’s learn from the past and never let the b-+=/;=ds have it their way again.
