Happened last week:

Passengers, crew rescued from capsized motorboat

Twenty-five passengers and four crew members of a medium-sized fishing boat were rescued yesterday morning after the vessel capsized due to big waves while en route to the famous dive destination, Apo Island, off the coast of Negros Oriental, to attend the island’s annual fiesta celebration.

The F/B Albert, skippered by Roselito Sangual, was ferrying the passengers across to Apo Island from the Malatapay Terminal in Maluay, Zamboanguita town, about 30 minutes drive south of Dumaguete, when the weather suddenly turned bad about halfway into the trip, Lt. Commander Agapito Bibat, commander of the Coast Guard Station in Dumaguete, said.

It would take an estimated 30 to 45 minutes to get to the island, Bibat said, noting that the seawaters between Apo Island and Malatapay could get rough due to unpredictable weather.

Initial reports from the Coast Guard showed that the fishing boat, owned by a certain Alberto Sangual of Zamboanguita town, left the Malatapay wharf around 9:15 a.m. and luckily, another rental motorboat, the M/B Shana, which also carried a few passengers, was behind them when the accident happened, Bibat said.

Aside from the crewmembers and passengers of the M/B Shana, a team from the Negros Oriental Search and Rescue led by Alejandro Somoza also helped in the rescue operations that lasted for about an hour at which all those who were in the water were all accounted for and brought to Apo Island.

The capsized pumpboat was also towed to the island.

Those rescued were identified as Alberto Aldenese, Melchora Tuban, Moises Baga, Loreto Daymil, Desideria Daymil, Pondadera Aldenesel, Efren Aldenese, Warlito Samy, Susan Mama, Peter Aboyabor, Jaja Cataylo, Edie Toto, Miguela Batayonon, Rogelita Tuballa, Gimbon Tuballa, Federico Tuballa, Ian Lee Patrimonio, Theresa Lopez, Ginette Vicuna, Jerecho Duran, Jezrell Poblacion, John Rey Partosa, Jade Acabal, Ma. Geselda Casido, Jose Vernon Lopita, Petchria Sol, Ronald Teves, and Noel Enojo.

Bibat said the Coast Guard station at Malatapay had determined that the F/B Albert was not overloaded, as its maximum carrying capacity is 30 passengers per trip.

The Coast Guard did not cancel any trips to Apo Island and back even after the incident, although its personnel were continuously monitoring the weather conditions yesterday.

Some foreign nationals were also seen returning to Malatapay from a dive trip to Apo Island, while a foreign couple also chartered another motorboat to go diving on the same day.*JFP

Back to topic..

It's been a while since I was up there, but I think the closest you can have is the Highland Resort (was under construction back than but looked fancy).

Don't know the ferry to Guimaras, but would not expect much ... shoot Jellyfish a PM, I think to remember that he goes to Guimaras once in a while.

hi!

Hi! I am from Pulupandan. The boat size is a little bit bigger compare to Boracay boat if you have been there. It can carry 60 to 80 people.

What was the cause? Driver error or equipment malfunction? Rough seas, in and of themselves, sound like a contributing factor, but was it the only factor?

Thanks Rhoody and Jennefer. I think Highland resort is closer to San Carlos but looks nice. Boat size is reassuring. I wasnt on the capsized boat last week, thankfully. Lucky that Atlantis boat was nearby or it would have been a real disaster. My trip to Apo was 2 years ago on regular pump boat. Started of calm but weather quickly deteriorated. We were all soaked and perched on those little benches . The swell was way above the boat and i was really worried that the engine would conk out due to the water we were taking on. The clincher was when I saw how worried the pilot looked. We turned back around half way . Never been so glad to get on dry land . When we got back we were told that a storm signal had been posted after we left. I vowed then never to get one of those little boats to Apo again even if the sea is as calm as a mill pond.

We are using regularly the banka trip from Pulupandan to Guimaras. It's not at all comparable with the banka boats which go to Apo Island.
Never been wet (from sea-water ) on my trips to Guimaras which I can't say from trips to Apo Island.

Tirambulo Highland Resort is near Mabinay. My wife and I stayed there one night during our honeymoon 8 years ago. The grounds were terrific, but the cabins were literally falling down at that time. (Maybe have been upgraded since?) We intend to return one day.

Up the road a few KM is Niludhan falls, worth a visit if in the area. This is a beautiful area to spend a day trekking around, caving or not.
