You don't probably need the large family room at Bethel do you? There really isnt much of a view of the sea from those rooms anyway, trees block most of it. But you will get a lot of street noise coming in those front facing rooms-more than you may want.

No alcohol or smoking allowed in Bethel. Lots of people going in and out on the weekends for conventions, weddings etc. Gets annoying at times as they clog up access.

Thanks to all for the input and advice. Bethel was attractive mainly due to their location and being able to walk out the front door onto the boulevard. I think I'll go with Palwa though not only for their lower rates but for the excellent customer service/e-mail response time when making a reservation. After looking at Wikimaps it appears Palwa is only 4 blocks to the water and centrally located. By the way, I'll only be in Dumaguete for a short one night visit and it'll be on a Wednesday. Is there any nightlife on Wednesdays in the area? What is the best Blvd location to kick back, have a beer and people watch/look out on the water?

Hayahay sounds great! Is Hayahay walking distance from Palwa? What about Why Not on Wednesday nights? How do the clientele differ at the two places...

Probably mostly Filipinos at Hayahay; foreigners at Why Not.

I have stayed in Bethel and Palwa and like both. I found with Bethel it's best to book ahead as they often have conventions booking them out. Last time I stayed in their newer rooms on 5th floor. No view from room, but I had room service bring me breakfast on the balcony, which was nice and had a good view. talking of breakfast, it was included with Palwa accomodation, and you had a choice, unlike some places where you just get the "house breakfast". Breakfast was not included in my stay at Bethel.
Regarding walking distance, ok I am a long legged foreigner and could get from Palwa to Boulevard in 5 mins, even my mrs who is Filipina did not need to use a trike each time we went out!

What I'm hearing is all the reasons to stay at the Bethel, especially if it is to be for one night only and you wish to be near or at where the action is.

than I would stay at Hotel Nicanor, brandnew (opened yesterday), Palwa Sister 2 minutes to the boulevard, rooms don't look like Hospital-rooms from the 60th like in Bethel and if you really find action, you can bring it home...

Thanks for the information on Hotel Nicanor. I'm guessing it's closer to the Boulevard than Palwa but one street up on San Jose Street? As it's a sister hotel to Palwa I'll check if I can move my reservation over. Wonder if they have smoking rooms or a patio/balcony...
