PhilT; you are of course right about the limitations of scooters. If limited to one 2 wheeler, it would have to be a good motorcycle, capable of going anywhere. Sadly, my back won't stand up to a day on a motorcycle. Most of my dirt road exploring will be done with a 4 wheel drive truck, unless I can make some friends who don't mind having an American laying in their floor till his back quits protesting. Untill then, a scooter will get me up on 2 wheels, at least on the paved bits, for as long as I can stand. I'll be happy to be riding at all. Robert K

 

:o Robert, may be the MP3 is not a bad idea after all, Quite agree 2 wheels not always best for the Back on some roads here. Trust it is not Playing you up just Now.

Jack yes the mini cooper is nice but not so practical bUT I have seen a few mini cooper estates! and they are low but surprisingly roomy to load stuff in or at least they look like they have good space I am looking for a new car at the moment it has to be a family car no frills...

 

It was the Estate I was looking for, apparently BMW prefer the "A" Class in Asia, at 6ft 1in and 14 Stone (196 lb) (90 kilos) I found the "A" a bit of a Squeeze but the Min was Comfortable, Some one told me they are Plentiful in HK but only one dealer in PI and that is CEBU. Servicing and Parts would be the problem so I guess I will have a look at the Brochures when the Time Comes, I see they appeared on the Breakfast table this morning he he he

Thanks for the concern about my back, Jack. I can happily report that I'm in the middle of a hopefully long, series of good days. Except for servicing; I still think the mini would make a great car for the islands. Mini even has a 4 door + hatchback called the Countryman for 2011. As I said before though; I'm sure everyone will be pleased with whatever you get. On the MP3, I still think they are a bit complicated for the purpose. I also read in an owners forum that long delays can be expected [ a month or more ] if your MP3 goes into the shop for repairs to the front end. That point may no longer be valid. All manufacturers seem to be slow in setting up follow on service, but I wouldn't chance it. Good luck on the automobile quest. Robert K

Well Robert, That is a cross we have to bear, we from the US or GB, have this thing about TODAY! Of course, I have spent so many years in Spain that I do Actually UNDERSTAND the meaning of the Word, MANANA!. mmm Think, NO more can be said on that particular Subject. The brochures have now moved to my bedside Cabinet! SAY no more. They will be Obeyed!

I fully understand manana, Jack. Manana doesn't worry me. Not being able to get parts back ordered 2 months ago would worry me here, if I didn't have another vehicle, or if I couldn't buy 1. In the Philipines, I could just make alot of friends in trikes and jeepneys. As strange as public transport in the Philipines seems to an American, it does get the job done, but may entail riding with poultry! Robert K

 

Scooter Modifications

Jack, I'm sure you have been enjoying scooters longer than I have. Have you done much in the way of larger variators/weights /belts/final drive gears and big bore kits or stroked crankshaft? I have been thinking of building up a scooter from parts as a rainy day project if I can find a cheap mainland China scooter and basically replace everything but the frame. I have plans in my head for a nice 175cc with an iron cylinder, made from off the shelf parts from Taiwan. I'm no longer fit to be a diesel truck mechanic but the desire to work on something never goes away, or at least hasn't yet. This would be in addition to another scooter. I sure like that VS150.
