    BobDobbs,

    Be smart!

You have been given good advice from all that have responded to your post.
The Dude is right on. Forget the dating services.

Food for thought: You should not, voluntarily or otherwise, "compensate" anyone for "friendship".

On your first visit to the Phils., Don't tie yourself down to one person/friend, or location. Don't limit your ability to explore, (go where you want, do what you want, when you want, and meet/talk to whoever you want, etc.).

If it's your goal to share friendship, or more, with a filipina woman, find the girl of your dreams on your own. Not on a website, but in real life. Go out into the provinces. There are some real charming, moral, ethical, true filipina beauties out there.

    Be brave!

I was. On my first trip to the Phils., I went alone and without anyone to meet me at the airport or show me around Cebu. It took some courage and some good perception about people, but it turned out to be a wonderful adventure/experience and the precursor to my happy marriage. However, just like in the U.S., don't hang out in bars/places/areas that are unsafe.

    Good Luck!

Don't worry, I've heard everybody loud and clear. All the little warning flags that I initially ignored, wanting to give the benefit of the doubt, well, I'm not ignoring them now. It's obvious now that I'm being played. A cheap lesson, actually. There are far worse stories out there.

Coming there alone and exploring the place is a scary proposition that I have to get my head around. I suspected it was necessary before; now I know it is.

Thanks, you guys. You've been a big help.

Thanks for the encouragement, Rhoody. I'm going to start a new thread so we can get off this online scammer topic.

In my view, Dumaguete, or even Cebu is far better than Manila. If you decide to do a week in the Phils., give some thought to going directly from Manila, or Cebu, to Dumaguete. Maybe one, or some, of the guys on the board that are living in Duma. might be willing to take you under their wing, so to speak, so you could have the opportunity to meet some of the local foreigners and local filipino's/filipina's there, and get a good lay of the land. Do some research on Negros Oriental. (Dumaguete).
Most of the guys in Duma. seem to be nice, helpful people.
Just a thought, but you would get to see a more realistic view of what the Phils. is about. Manila, alone, is not a good standard to judge the Phils. by.

Please see my other thread, where I brought this up. I'd love to hear your reasoning for your opinion.

Mods, please feel free to close this thread. The original question has been answered quite well.

Thanks, but I think the other guys are right and she's a scammer, albeit a pretty good one.

In any case, I was really interested in just having a contact in the Phils to help my transition, but now I think she'd be as much a hindrance as anything else. Going it alone in a completely foreign country is scary, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
