Robert Johnson and Elmore James were two of the old american artists that most greatly influenced John Mayall and other UK blues artists. If it were not for the brittish "keeping" the blues alive in popular music, many of the original acts might have faded into oblivion. Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, and Elvin Bishop did similar just a bit later here in the U.S.

The Brittish take on the blues was unique, it not only preserved the form but generated a new kind of blues, technically proficient and reinterpreted. which then evolved into the big rock acts to follow.

The johnson hallmark contribution Crossroad blues, spawned legends about his so called pact with the devil, no doubt he would have been surprised to here the Cream live version which became their no. one live song, and Eric Claptons best recorded solo on their live Cream album. No Doubt Clapton signed his pact with the Devil as well...

Ok just tell me to shut up.

Lofty, great song yes, but... I just watched the you tube video, that was not so great, other than Mick Taylor's guitar work, I can imagine since Tayor was new to the group, there were rehearsal issues. even Jagger got disgusted with it, you can see him pulling the mike from his face and mouthing ah F..k. he blew the last part of the song and they were all standing there looking at each other trying to figure out how to end it, pretty funny.

Other than that, jagger winking at the groupie shows he wasn't particularly into singing the song, and I love the guy tying off to do what looks like some drug in the beginning, and the other smokin pot, yes, it was the 60's

watching that old vid, wow they looked young.

Yes RHB, not a very polished performance by the Stones. They look hungover and spaced out. Must have been a tough life with all those girls and drugs.

As you say it was the british musicians who introduced a new generation to the blues. My introduction was through the Bluesbreakers, Cream and the Stones. In my opinion a lot of great blues music has been let down by poor vocals. Jagger had the perfect raw voice for the blues and blues/rock. Lowell George was another great singer " roll another one.....just like the other one....you been holding onto it...and I sure would like a hit....don't bogart that joint my friend...." If I hadn't inhaled i might be able to remember who sang the original of that song from Easyrider.

Absolutely RHB. For quality and longevity Van Morrison would take some beating. Arguably the best vocalist of all time.

Well my claim to fame is that I photgraphed Eric Burdon (then with the animals) and anybody heard of the late great Sonny boy Williamson? all part of the 60's scene when Liverpool was the "capital of music culture" and the blues was at its height here in Uk....regards JB
