    There are two types of people in conversations: those who talk AT you and those who talk WITH you. During my adult life I've ended many of my random social interactions to get away from someone who just wanted to talk AT me. It's not just expats.

    But as the months rolled by during my travels in the Phils, I was beginning to wonder if I'd ever find an expat who wouldn't just shut the bleep up every once and a while. I know I'm being exposed to people from cultures, classes and socio-economic backgrounds that are different from my circles of friends in the states. That's part of it. The main part is alcohol, IMHO.

    Alcohol turns most men into bores (and sometimes boors), long before they are drunk. Hanging with the homies for most expats seems to require alcohol. There have been two places in country where I've encountered more than an isolated few folks who wanted conversation, not beer fueled verbal spew.

    One was at the surf resorts north of San Fernando, La Union on Luzon. I surfed for 10 years, that gave me some common currency with the surfers I met there regardless of their ages. Most enjoyable.

    The other is here in Dumagete.

    expat or no expat;;

    has the right to monopolize conversation as long as they dont talk bul. Like the teacher in the school, you can learn a thing or two. Most of this expat had traveled places that i havent been. and some are more gatsy, and some are crazy. they would do thinks that i wouldnt do.. (i wonder who could that be?) . so if you can learn from this people, take it. but if you cant stand them get out... as a saying "IF YOU CAN NOT STAND THE HEAT, GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN " so i think it will be fare.. after all this is a free country..
