My 2 cent's. I have 2 kids and i have always done my best to teach them to respect wild animals. My daughter 7 and my son 15 will help wounded birds then release them if all goes well. Someone brought a wild bird with a string tied around it's leg about a year ago, I asked my kid's what should we do? they both said release it back to the wild.

When sailing I saw many cultures that would kill anything that moved no matter what, so in my small part I will educate my own kids.

Thank's Jack, but my teenager (need I say more?) is far from perfect but he did learn there is no glory in indiscriminately killing something just because you can. Now if he would listen on other things?

Wow anglerman, you must be very knowledgeable! Thanks for the info. I live near the airport rice fields and at harvest time you are correct, there are lot's of birds. The rice field workers set up noise makers to keep them from eating all the rice. Frequently the small ones even swoop through my house. Most mornings I wake up to bird chirps instead of roosters like so many other areas.

Thanks Ron and Firefly, today in my garden I have found a nesting pair of white throated fantails the nest is tiny and perched precariously on a branch its a wonder it can support the birds. They are really brave in the fact that any birds that approach the tree including the lesser coucals that are far larger than them they attack them vigorously until the intruders retreat. I am lucky that I have a birding scope I bought with me from UK so can sit on my porch and watch these birds in comfort I will keep you posted on the progress of these parents if you are interested.
    Colin.

    Hi Colin,

thanks for the info , i'm envious of the fact you have a bird nest in your garden, back in the UK i would look out for birds and their nests. This time of year i would be fishing at Radley in Oxfordshire, there you can find Cuckoos laying their eggs in the read warblers nests, i used to take a Cuckoo caller with me, and managed to get quite a good view of them as they came to investigate.

Alan PS i often wonder where all the birds i see nest, as i have never seen one

I am sure others also will like to keep up with the progress of the fantail family.

    Take care
